Spring 2016 Anime Series Preview

I’m still behind on posts but that won’t stop me from writing about some of the newest animated works coming out of Japan. This season isn’t much different from last season. There are a ton of terrible series airing this Spring.  Gone are the days that we would have between seven and fifteen series a season and only one or two of them would be horrendous.  If I recall that was around the early 2000’s that we had a lot of gems.  Even though we still get really great series like last season’s Boku Dake ga Inai Machi and Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu I’m still eager about what will be exceptional this Spring. I’m always for anime shows that surprise me. Here’s a breakdown of what’s been airing for the Spring 2016 anime season!

12-sai.: Chiccha na Mune no Tokimeki

78391

ANIMATION STUDIO: Oriental Light and Magic (OLM)
DIRECTOR: Seiki Taichu
ORIGINAL CREATOR: Nao Maita
SERIES COMPOSITION: Fumi Tsubota
CHARACTER DESIGNER: Shouko Hagiwara
MUSIC: Motoyoshi Iwasaki

PLOT: The story begins with Hanabi, a sixth-grade girl who is neither an adult nor a child. She deals with issues such as accidentally witnessing her homeroom teacher kissing, and worrying about experiencing physiological changes before her friends. The anime depicts a 12-year-old girl’s innocent worries and first love. ~ANN

A continuation of 12-Sai. I have never read nor seen this show. It doesn’t look too promising as it tackles melodrama at an early age. Fumi Tsubota has never written a full-fledge series on her own aside from assistance work. The good thing is that there’s a regular children’s series music composer working on this. So at least they have THAT going for them.

Aikatsu Stars!

78658l

ANIMATION STUDIO: Bandai Namco Pictures
DIRECTOR: Teruo Satoh
SERIES COMPOSITION: Yuuko Kakihara
CHARACTER DESIGNER: Yukiko Aikei
MUSIC: onetrap

PLOT: Yume Nijino aims to become a top idol, and she enrolls in the Yotsusei Gakuen (Four Stars Academy). This academy has a special group called the S4, who are the top four active idols in the school. Yume and the other first-year students aim to become a part of the S4. ~ANN

The fifth season of Aikatsu. And another idol series focusing on music? Sheesh. How many of these do we have a season now? The upside about Aikatsu is that occasionally it has some stunning animation. Every once in awhile I check this out solely for this reason alone.

A perfect example of this is a really neat dancing animation by animator Shingo Fuji from episode 127 of the Aikatsu series!

ANIMATION STUDIO: SILVER LINK
DIRECTOR: Shin Oonuma
SERIES COMPOSITION: Hitoshi Tanaka
ORIGINAL CREATOR: Cotoji
CHARACTER DESIGNER: Miwa Oshima
MUSIC: MONACA

PLOT: Tennogofune Academy’s is a home for students with “negative karma,” otherwise known as misfortune. The school’s class 1-7 has collected students burdened with negative karma. Hibari finds her first day of school ends in bad luck. Hanako noticeably suffers from poor health. Together, the two unlucky high school students might find their school life will become a “blessing.” ~ANN

This I might have to check out. Only because it’s SILVER LINK and MONACA. What is MONACA doing in a show like this? The animation studio impressed me with 2015’s Yuri Kuma Arashi and 2012’s Kokoro Connect with a varied style. Here we’ve got a series following the anime industry’s trend of “cute girls doing cute things”. If Bakuon! misled you into this style then this will be right up your alley. A comedy series rife with misfortunes. SILVER LINK might not be on the same tier as Kyoto Animation or MADHOUSE when it comes to designing its characters but it does have a niche in creating characters that are bright in tone and color. Looks like a warm and inviting series about school-life.

BAKUON!

A17959-2241464658.1457541137

ANIMATION STUDIO: TMS Entertainment
DIRECTOR: Junji Nishimura
SERIES COMPOSITION: Kurasumi Sunayama
ORIGINAL CREATOR: Mimana Orimoto
CHARACTER DESIGNER: Isao Sugimoto
MUSIC: Ryousuke Nakanishi

PLOT: Hane Sakura is a high school student who looks a little bit like an airhead. On the way to her all-female high school one day, she is worn-out climbing a hilly road with a bicycle, but she sees a girl named Onsa Amano who is riding a motorcycle. Sakura immediately becomes interested in motorcycles, and she and Onsa join the motorcycle club at the school. Then, Sakura sets out to get her license. ~ANN

Think K-On! and the take on everyday life but with girls entering a motorcycle club. Huge worry is that this is Junji Nishimura. The same Nishimura that ruined Glasslip and had little to no character development. Considering that he wrote the series composition to that series I sure hope MONSTER’s script writer Kurasumi Sunayama can smack some sense into Nishimura and develop something halfway decent with this show.

He meets a girl named Eto, who claims to have summoned him to Spirits World in order to prevent its destruction at the hands of the revived Evil God-King, who once plotted the destruction of Spirits World before being defeated and sealed away. Together with the confident, green-deck-wielding Yoku Albatrosa, who also came from another world, Shunta sets out to find the twelve God-Kings whose power originally sealed the Evil God-King. ~ANN

A children’s series about spirits and looks stereotypical for Beyblade director Kunihisa Sugishima. Not interested.

DIRECTOR: Katsuhito Akiyama

ORIGINAL CREATOR: based on the original series by Takao Aoki
CHARACTER DESIGNER: Toshiaki Ohashi
MUSIC: Yuusaku Tsuchiya

PLOT: Bart Aoi is a hot-blooded kid who loves to attack and wields a Beyblade named Valkyrie. His close friend Shū Kurenai is an elite Blader who is a genius but still puts in a lot of effort, and wields the Beyblade named Spriggan. ~ANN

It’s strange that Kunihisa isn’t doing this series and transitioning into the Battle Spirits anime. Make no mistake though. This series will do really good for kids. It’s insanely popular and has expanded into over 880 countries selling in total for the franchise US$1.6 billion. I’d like to see Masaaki Yuasa do a kids series for once just to change this genre up! Aside from his work on the Adventure Time series in the US.

Big Order

ANIMATION STUDIO: Asread
DIRECTOR: Nobuharu Kamanaka
SERIES COMPOSITION: Katsuhiko Takayama
ORIGINAL CREATOR: Sakae Esuno
CHARACTER DESIGNER: Chika Kojima
MUSIC: Evan Call

PLOT: Eiji Hoshimiya is an introverted high school student with a huge secret — he wished for the destruction of the world when he was younger. Fairies give certain people special powers called Orders. What Order Users can do with their power depends on their wishes. 10 years after the Great Destruction, Eiji struggles to come to terms with his immense power.~ANN

From the animation studio of Mirai Nikki and Ga-Rei Zero, this has the designs of those characters written all over this! I’m really interested in this! Love the key visuals for this anime! I’m really eager to see what Kamanaka does for this series. In the past he directed one of the most amazing episodes of Birdy the Mighty Decode I’ve ever seen. In a rarity where the sequel is better than the original series and Big Order’s director played a lead hand into that! Venturing into a style that Kemonozume didn’t even risk to go! Birdy episode 20 was marvelous and I hope to see that powerful episode direction translate to a full-fledged series like this one entirely! Also the music is going to be intriguing as it’s by California-born musician Evan Call. He began his career as a classical musical theatre singer before getting into writing music. Proficient in Japanese and Spanish as well as his native language English. He taught voice at Berklee College of Music and is branching out into other styles including rock, jazz and latin. Currently living in Tokyo as a member of the production talent Elements Garden. The works he’s done previously aren’t the greatest I’d like to see him do music for a unique series and (hopefully) this might be it! Now I really want to check this out!

DIRECTOR: Chiaki Kon
SERIES COMPOSITION: Yuji Kobayashi
ORIGINAL CREATOR: Naoko Takeuchi
CHARACTER DESIGNER: Akira Takahashi
MUSIC: Yasuharu Takanashi

PLOT: The third season of Sailor Moon CRYSTAL! ~ANN

I finished the first two seasons of CRYSTAL. That was a horrible mess with super thick animation that never allowed the sailor scouts to move freely in any of the episodes! Everything about the show felt extremely forced and stiff! Apparently I’m not the only one who felt this way as the committee took it upon themselves to fire the director Munehisa Sakai. I hope he never works in this industry again! He tainted the story of Sailor Moon! This third season looks very promising! We’ve got the return of everyone who worked on the 2015 series (including the exceptional Mononoke composer Yasuharu Takanashi!) except we’ve got a new person in the director’s chair. Chiaki Kon. The director of Nodame Cantabile:Finale and Paris-hen!!! Yes!! Judging by the previews the animation looks absolutely stunning and freeform!

PLOT: Mankind has developed superpowers known as “Quirks” with 80% of the population having some kind of superpower. These new abilities see the rise of both superheroes and villains. A prestigious school known as the The Hero Academy trains superpowered hopefuls into the heroes the world needs. Middle school student Izuku Midoriya wants to be a hero more than anything, but he’s part the 20% without a Quirk. Unwilling to give up his dream, he plans to take the exam and be accepted into a high school for budding heroes. Through a series of serendipitous events, he catches the eye of the greatest hero, All Might, who agrees to train him. ~ANN

I am excited to see this series! I’m a huge fan of BONES and love just about every show they do! I have yet to read the manga to this so I will leave myself surprised when I start watching the anime! We’ve got a promising staff on this one! TRIGUN script writer, Gosick episode 15’s storyboard Kenji Nagasaki in the director’s seat! And of course one of my favorite composers this year. Death Parade’s Yuuki Hayashi!

Literary figures with supernatural abilities! I’m sold. This reminds me of the Hollywood film League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. From the trailers the visuals look insanely good, and with STAR DRIVER director at the helm I have no doubt this series will have solid characterization. Revolutionary Girl Utena series composition Yoji Enokido and music [C] the Money of Soul and Possibility CONTROL’s and Gatchaman CROWDS’ music composer Taku Iwasaki! What the hell?! PLOT: The band-aid on Shōta Kirifuda’s forehead — used to suppress his uncontrollable power — has peeled off. There seems no adverse effect at first. Suddenly, Shōta’s pet hamster Hamkatsu starts talking, revealing a big secret.~ANN

The director Shinobu Sasaki worked under Animation Studio Duame for a little while and he’s been working on Duel Masters for the past couple of seasons recently. What ever happened to Duame? Seriously. They animated Shiki and that turned out amazing. Speaking of amazing, one of the studios behind this work actually did handled the animation on the Colorful film. Talk about a surprise! Never got into the Duel Master series. I tried. I really did. It’s a mediocre show based off of a popular card game in Japan. How many of those do we have now? The only redeeming factor about Duel Masters is the 3D creature designs and animation are pretty neat. Aside from that there isn’t much here.

PLOT: Endra is an unknown world beneath the surface of Earth itself. It is another world, where the giant Adamas shines above and seven-colored bands drift across the skies. One day, Shun Asanaga — an ordinary yet positive and bright 15-year-old middle school boy who lived in the “Land Above” — discovered a mysterious crystal at his scientific businessman father’s company, and the moment he touched the crystal, he was transported to Endra. He meets the recently captured 16-year-old Prince Emilio, who strongly despises the current King Delzaine and was imprisoned after seeking vengeance against the current monarch. ~ANN

This has been done to death. From the trailers the animation looks shoddy and very bland. The whole idea behind a mysterious object transporting the lead male character to a fantasy world is the same premise for about 4 series this season and was the story of at least 3 that I can recall last season! Come on Brains Base try something different! At least the studio is redeeming themselves with another Natsume season later this year!

PLOT: Aomori, Japan. In a land blessed by nature’s bountiful beauty, bizarre things begin to take place. Makoto Kowata, 15 years old, is a professional witch. She left Yokohama with Chito, her black cat, to live in the house of her relatives in Aomori. This is where she begins to train as a witch. Even though Makoto’s powers are still limited to just flying through the sky, she and her second cousins Kei and Chinatsu surely make the most out of each and every day. ~ANN

This looks absolutely adorable! There aren’t many series you can sit down and have tea and just relax. This would be one of them. A slice of life coming of age story about a young girl becoming a witch. This will be good I can say that for sure. The charm is that it will have a nice balance of humor and sincerity. No huge Urobuchi plot twists to mess with your mind just all around light-hearted fun! The visuals look pretty good and just hope Deko Akao can keep up the momentum from the amazing Akagami no Shirayukihime! Which I still need to finish reviewing. *laughs*

Another children’s series. This looks awful. It amazes me how Xebec can go from animator 90’s and 2000’s classics like Martian Successor Nadesico and The Third. PLOT: Upon Rikka, the academy-city above water, or what many call the “Asterisk,” students of the six schools prepare for the Festa. These annual comprehensive battle tournaments are held on a worldwide scale and each of the six schools place their hopes in their teams to bring them victory. In the Phoenix Festa (tag-team battle) category, Seidoukan Academy’s Ayato Amagiri takes up the challenge along with his partner Julis, the Witch of the Resplendent Flames (Glühen Rose). ~ANN

After hearing Rasmus Faber do the work of his jazz anime theme song albums it’s so strange to hear him do chiptuning and dubstep for Gakusen Toshi’s soundtrack. It would be cool to hear compose for a Shouwa period anime. That would be incredible! I saw the first season and it was terrible. Six schools right next to each other that only escalate further to some of the worst melodrama I’ve ever seen. A-1 Pictures does hits and misses. Last season’s Boku Dake ga Inai Machi was awesome. Having nother season of this crap. Oh boy. -_-

I feel bad for Wada. The composer to D.Gray-man doing a lawyer series. Wrong move. Just wrong. Videogame adaptations are rarely ever good. Unless it’s Steins;Gate. This series I would not recommend it if you weren’t playing the games. Judging by the style of the show it looks as though everything is made in reference to them. I don’t have high expectations for this at all.

Another “cute girls doing cute things” series. Based on what I’ve seen of episode 1 it feels a lot like Kantai Collection. No thank you. This will be heavily animated due to the fact that Aniplex is producing this. Judging by their track record I can tell that there’s going to be a lot of merchandising efforts involved with Haifuri down the road. Perhaps Yuu Nobuta should ask Tomohiko Ito [Boku Dake ga Inai Machi] on how to establish “cute” in an anime series.

However he feels a strange yet familiar sense of incongruity towards Emil Crossford, his roommate who somehow knows him from somewhere. On top of that, as soon as he enters the school, he is challenged to a duel by the “Queen” and the school’s most powerful Slayer, Claire Harvey.~ANN

After seeing this first episode. I really wish I could get that time back. What the hell was this?! Awful. Absolutely awful! A girl crossdressing as a boy is actually a boy. What? Not to mention there was not research done on how school systems function. A student council president can expel students? Oh Production IMS don’t even get me started on your fanservice with this show. Flashbacks after flashbacks and does Kobayashi even know how to handle pacing? If there’s an example this season of how to write a terrible episode this would certainly be it. And as such I’m giving this show negative percentage. You want to know what the sad thing is? This will probably get another season. It’s based on a light novel and otaku eat that crap up like pocky.

I’m actually not sure why I haven’t written about the previous JoJo series. The series is really funny. It’s highly entertaining! This looks even better than the previous seasons of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series. You know this will be good when you’ve got the entire team behind the previous ones working on this. Plus, they’re in higher positions so they can direct any newer staff coming onto this series. One of the reasons why I like watching JoJo is for the over the top action. It’s ridiculous and for good reason. Visuals look cool and the music still sounds awesome. Considering its coming from Yuugo Kanno. The composer to PSYCHO-PASS.

One of my favorite composers working on a shouwa spy period piece! Yes! I’ve been waiting for someone to adapt the 2011 novel series and the live-action was top-notch! Boku Dake ga Inai Machi’s series writer Kishimoto will be handling the overall writing of Joker Game. Now I know these characters will be handled nicely. When one Kiznaiver is wounded, the system divides and transmits the wound among the other Kiznaivers.~ANN

This looks really good. It caught me by surprise that Imaishi isn’t working on this one. He’s too busy with his other shorter length series Space Patrol Luluco. Good to see this is going to be in capable hands. Interesting sci-fi premise and some of the best visuals this season! It’s not wacky and wild and far away from TRIGGER’s usual style! Love this! I am a bit worried that this is a creation of Mari Okada as she’s done some pretty poor series in the past. She does however know how to deliver solid drama at times–GOSICK, Red Garden, Simoun, Toradora, Anthem of the Heart. I hope she knows what she’s doing with her first ever TRIGGER series.

ANIMATION STUDIO: WIT STUDIO
DIRECTOR: Tetsuro Araki
SERIES COMPOSITION: Ichiro Okouchi
ORIGINAL CREATOR: Tetsuro Araki
ORIGINAL CHARACTER DESIGNER: Haruhiko Mikimoto
MUSIC: Hiroyuki Sawano

PLOT: On the island country Hinomoto, humans hide themselves in fortresses called “stations” against the threat of zombie-like beings with steel hearts known as “Kabane.” Only armored locomotives known as “Hayajiro” go between the stations.~ANN

If anyone has seen the live-action Korean/U.S. film Snowpiercer then this might be right up your alley. This is basically Shingeki no Kyojin [Attack on Titan] meets Princess Mononoke. It’s by the same team that did Shingeki. Really the same exact team down to the key animators! I wonder if Tetsuro Araki has known for awhile that the second season of Shingeki was going to be delayed and decided to make this. Perhaps the original announcement of Kabaneri was much different than what we’re seeing in the final product. This has his style written all over it. Steampunk and post-apocalyptic. Fantasy and action. This would be as if he though Shingeki was a great introspection into human fear and decided to “up the ante” with feudal Japan character designs in the mix. This team knows exactly what its doing. Getting Hiroyuki Sawano to compose for another Araki anime they know exactly how to develop works that sell. I will say this premise with zombies does sound intriguing. I’ll give this a shot. I love the character designs. Finally a WIT STUDIO got someone that knows how to use shading techniques properly. It will also be interesting to see how Amazon Prime’s deal with this show will be handled from here on out. Looks like a lot of series are following this trend of simulcasting.

PLOT: Machi is a middle school student who serves as a shrine maiden (miko) at a Shinto shrine enshrining a bear (kuma) in the recesses of a certain mountain in Japan’s northern Tōhoku region. Machi’s guardian is a talking bear named Natsu, and one day Machi says to Natsu, “I want to go to a school in the city.” The worrywart Natsu then gives Machi — who is ignorant in the ways of the world — a set of trials that she must pass in order to be able to survive in the city. ~ANN

This looks adorable. I like those background designs and it’s got an interesting opening and ending song judging from the previews. Looks like a cross between the cuteness of Inari Kon Kon and Shirokuma Cafe. I might give this try. I’ve never heard of EMT Squared. Wonder how much Production I.G. will be doing since they’ve got a few other series they’re working on this season.

Yes P.A. Works is finally doing something different! It’s about time! I only hope they don’t decide to focus on the school life rather than the mecha series its advertised to be. If things go well for them we might be seeing more like this series in the future. Animation is P.A. Works usual–all in-house animation, music, sound effects. They’re betting a lot on Kuromukuro considering its being simulcast worldwide by Netflix.

The original Macross was a classic, Macross Frontier which surprisingly enough was never released in the U.S. due to the Harmony Gold issue including previous Macross works was an amazing series.  What the heck is this?  Pop idols piloting mecha?!  This show will sell I can tell you that much but whether or not Shoji Kawamori can get his team to tell a good story that’ll be something else.

This show is trying too hard to be like ANOTHER.  I was unimpressed by the trailers and from what I’ve seen of episode 1.  I initially was excited about this show because Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso’s composer is finally doing a horror series. This felt more like a P.A. Works production rather than a Diomedea work. I’m sure the setting will be good because this is coming from staff that originally were a part of Mushi Pro and Group TAC.  Gilgamesh was an interesting post-apocalyptic setting wrapped around dreadful characters that were done by a few of the writers of this show. Aside from that there isn’t much here. My biggest worry is that Mari Okada could favor this show over Kiznaiver.  Let’s hope that is not the case.

He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.~ANN

This sounds interesting. A bunch of cliches that many fantasy series follow and this series doesn’t do that at all.  He meets a strange girl who pretty much ignores him. And the only power he has is that when he dies, he goes back to the start of the day again.  That sucks. I really like it when series do this.  They repeat a series of events that could last a span of episodes with minimal changes in between–that is if the main character doesn’t do anything drastic to change his fate.  I’m curious to see how this one is going to turn out.  And from the looks of it the premiere will be two episodes instead of one. It’s also going to follow a 1A and 1B route rather than episode 1 and 2.  Clever!

It amazes me sometimes how quickly source material can receive an anime adaptation or feature-length film for that matter!  A standard shonen series but with an upside and a downside to this.  The upside is that the characters are finally going to fight together as a team.  None of that BLEACH 3 to 5 episode long fight sequences.  The bad is that Studio Pierrot is animating this.  They are sub-par and seeing as how horrible Tokyo Ghoul turned out to be aside from the premiere episode back in 2014 I don’t see this changing anytime soon for the studio.  Too bad MAPPA couldn’t animate Tokyo Ghoul that would have been awesome.

The only redeeming aspect of this series is its composer.  From the same that gave us the solid score for Eureka Seven.  Aside from that I don’t hold too much hope for this one.  Based on a card game and this premise feels like every other card adapted to anime that’s ever been done before.  The only recent one I can think of that was good was Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis.

Chihiro is very good at doing housework and chores, and his mother’s motto is “No work, no food.” After his mother suddenly dies, a man named Madoka Taketori who claims to be his uncle shows up, and asks Chihiro to come live with him. Chihiro initially refuses, but when seeing the horribly dirty state of Madoka’s rich home, he decides to start cleaning it. Then Madoka makes another offer to Chihiro: that he comes to live with him, but in exchange Chihiro will do the housework. Chihiro accepts this deal, but suddenly finds himself in a maid uniform. ~ANN

This sounds like a horror series.  Unfortunately it isn’t.  A comedy series that focuses on the lifestyle of a maid.  Too bad Duame couldn’t animate this and have it directed by either Masaaki Yuasa or Kunihiko Ikuhara. That would make this show gold.  I am curious how the composer Yamada got into this profession since he’s been doing producer for the past twenty something years even on the Love Hina series.

Studio DEEN is known for making yaoi series so this was right up their alley.  Not too interested in this show because one, this series has been done before and two the romance in this sounds very creepy.  The visuals do look pretty good for Studio DEEN and considering their track record it’s not all that surprising.

Naka-Kon 2016

More than anything Naka-Kon this year reminded me that anime is a business and as a business it is emphatically geared towards young teens. While this is understood implicitly, knowing something to be true and actually experiencing it are two different things entirely. Naka-Kon was dominated by crowd-pleasers, and hit all the right notes, yet somehow still fell flat for me, but then again I was not the target audience.

Case in point would be the Funimation-led panels. Funimation’s approach has always been to sell what is admittedly a youth product as a youth product; you can see (and hear) this in their hyperkinetic approach to voice acting and dubbing in general. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this; but, arriving at the Funimation Favorites panel, I experienced what at the very least felt like a tightly scripted sales event, rather than an actual panel led by actual fans.

Another example would be the Justin Tindle Q&A. Even after sitting and listening for thirty minutes, I can’t recall a single thing that the person said. It was mostly just a rambling collection of in-jokes and random loud noises, the aural equivalent of a human pinball machine – which, is honestly, a sort of compliment for a voice actor.  Still, you would expect some kind of overarching narrative thread; What’s it like being a voice actor? How did you get your start? Which characters have you identified with the most? Have you ever interacted with your Japanese colleagues? And so on.

There were a number of Japanese guests, the most prominent being the Earthbound Papas with frontman Nobuo Uematsu. Their Q&A session was extremely low-key; you could tell how much they enjoyed working on Final Fantasy VI, and how much of a game changer it was both for Uematsu and the game music industry in general. Interestingly enough, he claimed that the most interesting system to write for was the original Famicom, with its limited sound chip and memory.

Also present was Mamorou Yakota, who led the most substantive presentation and panel that was unfortunately sparsely attended. An industry veteran for almost 30 years, his main focus has been on character design and illustrations. One of the most interesting insights he gave was regarding the previous necessity of physically shipping animation cells back and forth between Japan, China, and Korea. With digital animation, data can be uploaded almost instantly, and there’s no need to index and store physical cells, since they’re aren’t any. In places like Tokyo, where space is at a premium, this must be a major relief.

SakeVisual’s presensation on making visual novels was an unexpected highlight of the day, although my developer friend sitting next to me nearly lost it when the first question to come from the audience was, “If the game engine they use is free to license, why do they charge money for games?” SakeVisual’s lead did a good job of gently explaining that  illustrators, musicians, and coders all expect, and deserve, to get paid for their time. I don’t know if this illustrates the growing disconnect between producer and consumer on the Internet, or the Internet and outside reality in general, or just the difficulty in understanding how businesses work when you’re only 15.

In truth, though, in terms of wanting something for nothing, I’m the biggest hypocrite of all. The thing I love about conventions are the industry insider panels, where you get some juicy gossip, some pithy insights, some esoteric recommendations, and often, but not always, some really good advice. These discussions tend to be the most expensive for conventions to provide, as they involve actual working professionals, some of whom have to be flown literally from the other side of the globe. These discussions also tend to have the least real interest among the majority of convention participants, who are mostly there to dress up, shop, and socialize. In effect, me getting to personally ask Nobuo Uematsu what he thinks of the work of Susumu Hirasawa (he likes it, esp. Paprika) is subsidized by the thousands of attendees milling around outside who weren’t even born when Final Fantasy VII came out.

It should come as no surprise, then, that as geek conventions become more and more of a business and less and less a labor of love that the programming will be increasingly tailored towards the actual interests and desires of the majority of attendees, who, like most popular culture consumers, tend to skew towards the young side. If I want to continue to consume geek culture at the qualitative level I have been previously, I will either need to either start paying the sticker price, or else find a way to get more people, particularly young people, interested in what I happen to be interested in.

Winter 2016 Anime Series Preview

I am so behind on my posts. Still need to work on around 10 shows that’s not including series from the Summer and Fall season.  For one of my New Years resolutions I’m making it a priority to cover this new season on a regular basis. At least I’m going to try to.  Without further ado here is the list of series.

  • ORIGINAL CREATOR: Original Work
  • SERIES COMPOSITION: Naruhisa Arakawa
  • CHARACTER DESIGNER: Asako Nishida
  • ORIGINAL CHARACTER DESIGNER: Shun Saeki
  • MUSIC: Kotaro Nakagawa

PLOT: An original anime set in a part of Tokyo that has descended into a quagmire, the story follows Unit 8 of the 5th Special Public Security Section’s 3rd Mobile Assault Division — popularly called “The Eighth” — who don powered armor “Willware” exoskeletons to counter the rise in crime.

The chief director is the same director of Code Geass. I’m glad to see we’ve got the Bakuman director helming this project under Taniguchi.  Hopefully there will be a mix of creative influence here.  Having the Spice & Wolf may help with the pacing of this series.  However, knowing it’s the same script writer of Upotte!! has me very worried that this is going to be just another mecha series filled with fan service.  Premise sounds interesting though especially the quagmire as the backdrop.  I just hope they’ve done their research for this show.

PLOT: 17 years ago, immortals first appeared on the battlefields of Africa. Later, rare, unknown new immortal lifeforms began appearing among humans, and they became known as “Ajin” (demi-humans). Just before summer vacation, a Japanese high school student is instantly killed in a traffic accident on his way home from school. However, he is revived, and a price is placed on his head. Thus begins a boy’s life on the run from all of humankind.

Coming back from the film the entire staff returns for the television adaptation.  POLYGON PICTURES uses a 3D technique that not very many companies use.  Their known for this and it really works, it’s very different from most anime that air alongside it. It’s also the team that did the Sidonia no Kishi series and film. I’m looking forward to this since it’s a horror series and music composer Yuugo Kanno did a nice job with the first season of Psycho-Pass’ soundtrack. What has me really sold is the script writer one of my favorites from 2015.  Hiroshi Seko.  Amazing writer that took on the best episode of Kill la Kill, episode 5.  Plus a few episodes of Zankyou no Terror.  I haven’t read the manga but I’ve heard nothing but stellar things about it. I’m looking forward to this one.

Boring story.  I tried to watch this series when it initially aired last spring and it was just awful.  Which is a surprise because I’ve enjoyed Seiji Kasha’s works before.

PLOT: In a world where flying is as simple as riding a bicycle, there is a popular sport called “Flying Circus” (dogfight race). The protagonist who once hoped for a future in this sport suffered a setback due to an overwhelming defeat, and withdrew from the sport for this and some other reason. However, he met the transfer student Asuka Kurashina, and in teaching her to fly the skies, the old passion returned. He takes part in the Flying Circus again.

Another eroge visual novel turned anime series.  Judging by the trailers the animation doesn’t look too bad.  It’s got a strange 3D look on the character designs that almost looks as if they did finishing touches with CG animation. The worrisome part about this is the original PC visual novel was written by Fruit of Grisaia‘s Nacho Kio and Kururu‘s Ryoichi Watanabe.  Both are known for doing extreme ecchi scenes and having an animated work in their hands just oozes sexually suggestive scenes everywhere.  I don’t really know much about the score production other than that its done by Fruit of Grisaia’s team–heavy on the synthesizer stringed melodies.  The story sounds generic too.  Curious about the setting though.

PLOT: Follows Satoru, a struggling manga artist who has an ability that forces him back in time to prevent deaths. When his mother is killed he’s sent back in time to solve the mystery, but ends up back in elementary school, just before the disappearance of his classmate Kayo.

Asian Kung Fu Generation is performing the opening song! Yes!! What’s even cooler is that they’re redoing a song from 2004, Re:Re.  Nice way to tie in the show’s themes of time travel! I could not have asked for a better team to handle this anime adaptation! I’ve been reading the manga and it’s absolutely wonderful! Gin no Saji‘s Tomohiko Ito will do a nice job getting the slow pacing down. Taku Kishimoto will nail down the characterization wonderfully!  The voice cast has me ever more intrigued. They went with authenticity by having lead character Satoru Fujinuma [29 years old] be voiced by popular J-Drama actor Shinnosuke Mitsushima! Plus, the voice of Satoru Fujinuma [10 years old] will be voiced by J-Drama actress Tao Tsuchiya from popular film series Rurouni Kenshin! This will be the first time these two will be lending their talents to an animated work! If I remember correctly, Michiko e Hatchin has been the only other series to have it’s two starring roles be cast by big name Japanese actresses! This is going to be very good! The music already sounds dark and carries a heavy presence to the series themes of death and supernatural time traveling. Yuki Kaijura will do wonders for this anime! Great addition to the Noitamina lineup!

Commemorating the studio’s 10th anniversary. Really?  Let’s hope they don’t mess this up like they did with Arslan Senki‘s animation.  I think what strikes a positive in my book for seeing the first few episodes is Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso‘s composer Masaru Yokohama doing the music for this series.  Arakawa Under the Bridge soundtrack was amazing too. Great to see this guy being used for more stuff! What worries me a bit is that Hamatora was a mess of series and we’ve got the creator of that working on the scripts to this.  The animation is strikingly different than a lot of series I saw last year.  It’s like a cross between God Eater‘s cell-shaded style with designs straight out of Black Rock Shooter not sure if I’m glad about this. 3D animation always has the habit of being too shaky.  Sometimes it works like with Sidonia no Kishi but that’s because that series had a strong narrative to tell.  That being said, Bubuki Buranki is by the illustrator of Speed Grapher.  Character designs in that show were fantastic for its time.

PLOT: Kokonotsu “Coconuts” Shikada dreams of becoming a famous manga artist. The only problem—he’s terrible. His real talent is selling the complex and delicious snacks in his father’s “dagashi” shop. He never thought much about the family business until the trendy, eccentric Hotaru showed up. As a lover of “dagashi,” she can’t let his talent go to waste and decides she won’t stop ‘til she’s sold him on sweets.

I’m sold on the plot alone because it’s strange.  The focus on sweets should give anyone that’s a fan of Shokugeki no Soma a try for this series.  I checked out a bit of the manga and while it’s decent at best it does carry a lot of anime tropes that are often overused.  A comedy series with no substantial dramatic plot.  Just a strong emphasis on gag jokes with female Hotaru teasing Shikada left and right.  In manga format it’s ok because there is a pacing to it that balances between that and the side girl character that’s in love with Shikada.  Hopefully this show won’t be heavy on the fan service.  Given by this studio’s track record it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest that it would be anything more than just that.

PLOT: Humanity harnessed a new inexhaustible energy from inventions called “Coils” in 2051. In 2072, a skilled recovery specialist named Kyōma Mabuchi encounters a mysterious, beautiful woman right in the middle of a certain job. It is a fateful encounter that opens the door to the new dimension “W.”

The animation looks very stylish for a series that is extremely action-packed and is sci-fi heavy.  I’m glad to see the Dark Than Black and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex writer working on this.  He’s got a knack for science fiction and as beautiful as the characters look I’m sure this one is going to be pretty good.  My big issue with this is Kanta Kamei.  He did a nice job on Saekano earlier this year and Usagi Drop from 2011 was a great Noitamina series but when it comes to action series he overlooks the importance of characterization and how to get that on the screen.  I’ve got faith that Shotaro Suga will point him in the right direction, not to mention Funimation providing some backbone will definitely make the first few episodes come together quite nicely.  It’ll be interesting to see how the English dub will be handled considering they’ve got their hands in this show even way before it airs.

Looking forward to this one. What’s also great is where the original source material came from–Yuji Iwahara, the creator of King of Thorn!  He also designed the characters to Darker than Black!  When I saw this trailer I immediately got Darker than Black vibes from it.

PLOT: No one knows when, where, or how “the gate” was created; furthermore, no one can see, touch, or access it. However, when “the gate” is opened, realms of mortals, fairies, and daemons collide, destroying world orders. While leaders of three realms try to restore orders, some talented and capable mortals begin to approach the gate, now known as “Divine Gate.” Yet no one has reached the Gate and returned, however.

You know I’m not sure why this series’ writer Natsuko Takahashi is even doing this show.  It’s just a rehash of Gate from 2015.  The animation doesn’t even look that good even for Pierrot’s standards.  Takahashi could do so much better. I mean look he wrote the script for the animated version of Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo the series that single handedly had one of the best episodes I’ve ever seen in an anime!  Dare I even mention Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, fantastic character study! What’s even weirder is that the studio is using former Madhouse employee Ichiro Uno to design the characters, the same animator that worked on the amazing Metropolis film by Osamu Tezuka!  The anime industry is really grasping at straws these past few season aren’t they?  Gone are the days of 13 series per season.

I’m really glad to see that nothing has changed between x2 Shou x2 Ten and now this part.  The staff and seiyuu remain the same and I was quite impressed with Studio Shuka’s animation on these previous seasons.  Not as detailed with designs but they do have a different style that’s still very engaging.  I’m sure I will be following this one once I do a full season review of x2 Ten rather than episode-by-episode in order to catch up.

PLOT: Many years ago, Mavis Vermilion was a servant on Sirius Island, mistreated by a guild master and his daughter, Zera. When the guild came under attack, Mavis pulled Zera from the wreckage into the forest. This journey would change the course of magical history.

Not much is really known about the anime adaptation of this other than the music is done by the same composer of the ongoing Fairy Tail series. I’ll be honest, I never actually seen Fairy Tail past episode 75.  I stopped because it was getting too repetitive.  I feel this won’t be any different than the mainstream series.

An elf girl who is a survivor from the dragon’s rampage joins the group in their travels across the dangerous new world.

A-1 Pictures is doing a ton of stuff this season. Four series including one of my top picks, Boku Machi.  Plus they’re working on shonen ai film DoukyuuseiGlass no Hana to Kowasu Sekai and Persona 3 The Movie 4: Winter of Rebirth. That’s a lot of budget to use and animators.  Hopefully this season won’t run them dry for awhile. The staff returns for the second half of Gate. Yay. [You may insert sarcasm here]

Oh my goodness. This sounds promising.  For one it’s another A-1 Pictures production.  The director of the amazing and horrifying Moryou no Hako!  It’s really good he’s writing adapting this too because he sure knows how to tell a story without too much fluff. However, this is coming from a light novel so we don’t know how far this anime could get too.  Hopefully it won’t end up like what I’ve been hearing Rokka turned out to be. Still need to finish that series.  Also peaking my interest for this one is Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju character designer Mieko Hosoi.  Since its A-1 Pictures and Mieko they both know how to illustrate and get the animation to really move well.

When I heard this was receiving an anime adaptation I was ecstatic.  Sei Hatsuno is a very talented suspense writer.  I don’t know know decided it was a good idea to make this a P.A. Works series but I want to slap them. A tame music composer that’s worked on a lot of shonen and slice of life series.  This doesn’t work at all! The story is about the only thing that has my interest.  If anything they should have had MAPPA animate this with Nobuteru Yuki in charge of designing the characters.  The cover art just screams lots of potential from this guy.  It’s too bad Haruchika is receiving a very different style.  As much as I enjoy this story I will at least check out the first episode and make more judgments then.

In this transitional stage, everyone wanders around in a self-indulgent daze and the way out isn’t clear… This is the story of how two cybernetically enhanced girls meet.

I love Masamune Shirow’s works and this has a very interesting sci-fi story. I’m too sure about this one. Character designs look decent and it has Shirow’s complex story written all over this.  Cyberpunk setting, artwork looks excellent and the soundtrack sounds promising. TECHNOBOYS landed a very good ending song for Sakurako this past season.  From the trailer the music reminds me of Conisch.  I’m just not sold on the plot but I’ll at least give it a try.  Masamune Shirow’s been given the chance to departfrom his usual gritty technique in storytelling and artistic talent with Pandora.  I’m curious how this will turn out because it also has the creator of wacky, hyper-tension comedy series Excel Saga.

The Logicalists attached to ALCA, a special police agency whose duty it was to protect cities from assaults by foreigners (angels), were compelled to act in defense of cities, whether they wished to or not. Depending on their ability, Logicalists could initiate trance with goddesses from the other world, and stand a fighting chance on the battlefield. A civilian named Yoshichika Tsurugi, who lacked “Logic” and lived happily with his family, was caught up in an attack, and took shelter along with many people. He meets a beautiful goddess named Athena. In her hands, she had the “Logic” that Yoshichika lacked. Now both Yoshichika and Athena head to their destiny.

Another anime being produced alongside a card game based off of it. There seems to be a ton of these lately.  Bandai Visual, Bushiroad, Lantis, Nitro+ and Yui Iodo.  So many companies are under committee for this series!  Animation is very bright and has an extreme sense of “computer drawn style” to it.  I like the illustrations for the card game however for anime format it doesn’t look as good.  Story doesn’t even sound good–it’s fall under “boy meets girl” trope.  I’ll at least check out the first episode because Studio Dogakobo is a mixed bag.  GJ-bu was horribly animated while Natsuyuki Rendezvous was one of the most gorgeous series of 2012! I’m not going to build up high expectations for this one.

Excitedly, she brings her stuffed bear Mofurun with her to see what it was. When she gets there she sees a girl named Riko flying on a broom. Mirai has a lot of questions, and Riko explains that she’s searching for something. The two of them are wearing similar pendants. Then Batti, an ally of the dark magic user Dokurokushi, appears before them and demands the “Link Stone Emerald.” Batti creates a monster called a “Yokobaru” and drives them into a corner. Mirai, Riko, and Mofurun join hands and speak the magic words “Cure-Up Rapapa,” their pendants glow, and they become the legendary Precure.

Toei Animation on another Precure! project.  Judging by the other series in Precure! I’m not counting on anything large with this one.  Isao Murayama works on mainly children’s series so it’s nice to know the production is being handled by staff that’s worked on Precure! before.  This is a series that sells extremely well and why mess with a good thing. Unless you get Masaaki Yuasa to make his own Precure! concept. That’s something I’d for sure watch!

PLOT: In the near future, in a world born of human imagination, what humans would call ghosts or monsters appear, and they come to be called “phantoms.” Haruhiko Ichijō, is a first year at Hosea Academy along with his upperclassman Mai Kawakami, who fights phantoms with the ability “Spirit of Five Elements,” Reina Izumi, who has the ability “Phantom Eater,” and Koito Minase, who fights phantoms in solitude. They experience the ups and downs of high school life before a certain incident leads them to the truth of this world.

Kyoto Animation’s big work of the season.  Based on a light novel series with loads of fan service.  This looks like a cross between two of Kyoto’s earlier works Kyoukai no Kanata and Amagami Brilliant Park.  It’s weird.  Supernatural elements without slice of life mixed in between?  Chuunibyou was also based on a light novel series and I feel that this series will follow suit only using the source material as a recommendation instead of faithfully adapting it.  Looks like the entire team that gave us Kyoto’s works of the last 5 to 10 years are working on this.  I will say this.  The animation is stunning and these animators know how to pencil out characters that really know how to flow; however outside of that there’s not much.  Everything about this series is all in-house down to the art director and background animation studios.  This must be cheaper for them rather than outsourcing to another animation studio’s pool of illustrators.

CG looks awful.  Stereotypical bishonen series with an overuse of filtering between blurry bright backgrounds and the animation on the characters looks very loose.  The protagonist is like she’s straight out of the otome series Amnesia.  Another horribly written anime and video game. She’s ashamed that she has abilities just like the guys in this series.  Something seriously needs to be done to change the pattern of these adaptations from otome games.  These are targeted towards a female audience but perhaps there should be more depth to the story instead of too much flair.  Here’s an idea try doing something like STAR DRIVER or Captain Earth and give some dynamic characters and add in a story with heart.

PLOT: Komugi Yoshida is a somewhat clumsy second-year middle-school student whose strong point is her spiritedness. She performs as an idol like Kokona Saionji (her classmate and close friend) and Tsukasa Kisaragi (an idol who dresses in male clothing). However, unlike Kokona whose popularity is skyrocketing and Tsukasa with her charisma in male attire, Komugi’s only gigs are low-end ones like those at the local shopping district. Still, Komugi has her “dream” as she lives her dual lives as a idol and a middle school girl. One day, a mysterious injured creature named Usa-P appears before Komugi and asks if she wants to be a Legendary Girl who can use magical powers. She reluctantly becomes Magical Nurse and fights waves of masked figures. Meanwhile, a Magical Maid and a Magical Sister also show up.

A tried and true Mahou Shojo series.  I was hoping for another Gakkou Gurashi or Madoka but since this is a spin-off from the original Komugi-chan series then I know that’s not going to happen.  One of the best Mahou Shojo series I’ve ever seen was Mahou Shoujotai.  Amazing work and if anyone ever gets a chance to seeing it I highly recommend it!

Wow. This looks terrible.  Animation is flat and very little motion to the characters. CG is some of the worst I have ever seen!  The weirdest thing about this is that the director is working on this and mahou shoujo series Nurse Witch Komugi R. PLOT: “Stride,” is an extreme sport that involves six people on one team who run relay races through towns. Hōnan Academy and other schools compete to win eastern Japan’s top Stride competition, “End of Summer.” However, Hōnan’s team has shut down. First-year high school students Takeru Fujiwara and Nana Sakurai attempt to restart the club, but they must recruit six members for the team. They ask Riku Yagami to join, but he turns them down by saying that Stride is the one thing he doesn’t want to do.

This is the biggest surprise this season.  MADHOUSE adapting an otome game!? What? If there is any show similar to this series narrative it would have to be Air Gear.  That’s the kind of vibe I get with this. A slice-of-life director that worked on a handful of episodes of NANA and Aoi Bungaku is helming this? Again…what?  I already know this series story is going to hold a lot of promise.  Same series writer as Gin no SajiUsagi Drop and this season’s fantastic Boku Machi!  Otome style mixed with FreeRunning sport with a solid director and series writing not to mention from the trailer the animation looks stunning! I will give this one a try!

The protagonist Lu Wang, who possesses a special soul that is only available once in a thousand years, decides to take the exam, and he starts down the path toward becoming an exceptional sage.

My favorite sound director. Kazuya Tanaka handled the sound work on Mushishi and Aku no Hana (Flowers of Evil).  I wish that another studio was in charge of production, Studio DEEN hasn’t had the greatest track record lately.  I’ll give this one a try since its based on a Chinese online novel.  Details are scarce on how this show is going to look. I’m really curious.  If there’s anything Japan should animate from China it’s the manwha March Story.  Freaking amazing work.

Another Studio DEEN project this season and another children’s series for that matter.  Directorial debut for Sakura Gojo and coming from the Marmalade Boy script writer I’m not excited about this one.

PLOT: Lux is a former prince of an empire named Arcadia that was overthrown via a rebellion five years earlier. Lux accidentally trespasses in a female dormitory’s bathing area, sees the kingdom’s new princess Lisesharte naked, and incurs her wrath. Lisesharte then challenges Lux to a Drag-Ride duel. Drag-Rides are ancient armored mechanical weapons that have been excavated from ruins all around the world. Lux used to be called the strongest Drag-Knight, but now he’s known as the “undefeated weakest” Drag-Knight because he will absolutely not attack in battle. After his duel with Lisesharte, Lux ends up attending the female-only academy that trains royals to be Drag-Knights.

I’m a fan of Yuuko Kakihara. Hopefully the show will carry the grace and balance that Chihayafuru‘s second season had. The director of Gakkou Gurashi will be able to provide a solid direction to the cast in this show, hopefully. As much as I hated Glasslip it had a decent musical score.  Akito Matsuda’s work on Sound! Euphonium is probably his best work to date.  I’ll give this one a look at.

The spin-off to Muv-Luv and another hentai visual novel series.  This doesn’t have much promise.  I wasn’t a fan of Muv Luv. The weirdest part about this is the director went from doing Zone of the Enders and directing episodes of incredible series like MONSTER and Neon Genesis Evangelion to tons of ecchi series, White AlbumTestament of Sister New Devil. What happened to him?  It doesn’t help that Cross Ange‘s writing is adapting the series.

Steins;Gate director is about the only redeeming quality here.  Everything else Sato has worked on was horrible.  Once again we’ve got anime series based on a visual novel.  From the preview the music sounds terrible and is it just me or is Project No. 9 trying to copy Saekano?  The premise even down to the camera angles look reminiscent of that anime.  Designs aren’t even that good.

Yes!!! Finally a josei series and a historical one at that! The OAD’s were amazing and probably the best acting of 2015 out of any animated work from Japan!  The setting is unique and follows an intriguing genre–rakugo!  Quite the unconventional choice on Studio DEEN’s part but this is what made that studio so fantastic in the first place!  There’s nothing generic about this anime at all!  A character drama driven by Japanese customs!  The entire staff from the OAD’s return to adapt the manga into TV format.  If this is anything like those it’s going to be one of the best if not the greatest series to air this season! The soundtrack from the OAD’s were incredible.  Featuring a collection of smooth jazz songs!

Announcement and upcoming changes for こんにちはアニメの友人!!

vlcsnap-2015-11-28-09h44m18s8 vlcsnap-2015-11-28-09h45m49s109 vlcsnap-2015-11-28-09h51m26s208 vlcsnap-2015-11-28-09h53m24s33

While I’ve been catching up with Arslan Senki with a second viewing to help provide more in-depth coverage of the series overall I thought I’d make an announcement regarding a few changes to the site.

I’ve got tons of series on my watch list which you can find on the right side of this blog. And there are a few series I’d really like to cover and have had a lot of recommendations from friends about. Here is a list of potential series I really want to cover eventually.

  • Haikyu!
  • Noragami
  • Kemonozume! [I recently screened this for my anime club and they loved it]
  • Lupin the Third Blue Jacket series IV
  • Rampo Kitan Game of Laplace
  • The Perfect Insider
  • Mardock Scramble
  • Ghost in the Shell ARISE
  • Gakkou Gurashi
  • Japan Animator Expo
  • One-Punch Man
  • Concrete Revolutio

I’ve also got a huge list of feature films ranging from Miyazaki to Mamoru Oshii and most if not all of Satoshi Kon’s directed works.  It’s been ages since I’ve seen Paranoia Agent and even Boogiepop Phantom so I want to cover older animated titles as well.  I hope everyone is enjoying the new layout with the posts!  Episode production details right below the image screenshots and my review that follows.  As much as I love animation production I felt that I was putting way too much time into writing about the background of an episode rather than the actual content.  I’m still going to be posting about production but just not as much as what an anime is truly about from week-to-week.

Want to let my readers know that lately, I’ve been getting strong advertising of my blog through a wonderful Facebook page which you can find here.  Started in 2014 by C+ programmer and anime fan Al Jensen.  Check out his blog over at this website as it’s a very insightful read on computer/website programming.

The biggest news is that こんにちはアニメの友人 will be having another writer on board!  Welcome  Al Jensen!  I hope that I can gain a few writers for this blog for series that I’m personally less invested in.  As the intentions of this blog are categorical I hope to maintain that idea but also build that up by allowing different people to write about their perspective on the anime shows they watch.

The images above are a few of Al Jensen’s favorite series.

  • Shingeki no Kyojin [Attack on Titan]
  • Steins;Gate
  • PSYCHO-PASS
  • Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

MANGLOBE Studio

vlcsnap-2015-10-01-13h32m23s12 vlcsnap-2015-10-01-13h44m48s31vlcsnap-2015-10-01-13h33m53s87 vlcsnap-2015-10-01-13h29m49s255 vlcsnap-2015-10-01-13h30m17s9 vlcsnap-2015-10-01-13h34m38s76vlcsnap-2015-10-01-13h48m37s14 vlcsnap-2015-10-01-13h45m31s243

Sudden to the anime community and it’s own production team, MANGLOBE has closed its doors.  This saddens me because they were one of the few studios that broke out of traditions.  Between 2004 and 2009 they worked on all original anime productions.  This has its benefits–they can gain more money without any middle man such as mangakan or light-novel authors receiving royalties for their works in order to give their illustrators higher paying jobs.  It does have its negatives–studios putting money towards a project out of pocket where they still have to pay dues to production committees and creditors can be a huge risk especially if its a single investor financing the animated project.  Quality can be an issue because there isn’t very much money initial to utilize unlike adaptations when sometimes money is sourced from original material committees (publishers, serialization manga companies,etc.).  During Samurai Flamenco‘s production, around the second half if I recall, MANGLOBE was accruing loads of debt all the while still having money to pay back with their high-budget on 2008’s Michiko e Hatchin.  I think somewhere around that time someone at MANGLOBE wasn’t handling financials properly.

According to a financial report back in 2013 their debt had reached around $1 million and their profits were only hitting the $125,000 range between DVD/Blu-ray sales alongside merchandising sales.  It’s a shame these series can’t earn the respect they deserve for being different.  Teikoku Databank reported that the debt over time reached 350 million yen (2.9 million U.S. dollars)–now that’s why they didn’t do any shows or even co-produce any work in 2014.

If anyone is wanting to support the animators that haven’t been getting paid from last month to this month please support the Studio by purchasing their original series releases.  I’ve noticed especially on Amazon that a lot of these shows have dropped prices after the company’s bankruptcy was announced.

I’d really like to see an American company like Funimation or Aniplex help with the production of Japanese works–maybe then and only then the anime business can get out of the rut that its in.  MANGLOBE’s situation, while unfortunate as it is, goes to show how animation studios can’t keep doing original and out-of-the-box series to make money.  Sometimes you have to sell-out and produce anime that’s conventional to Japanese otaku.  Money-grabbing shows like Sword Art Online and SHAFT’s Monogatari series are great examples of this.  Clearly someone in the industry should point out this glaring mistake that too much anime is getting made yearly nowadays at a very high cost to its production team with low rewards.  In other words “move away from the capitalist model” of making animated works.  I may have mentioned this in a prior post which you can read here.

I remember back in the early 2000’s when  Studio GONZO was another company that marketed on this very idea.  Creating anime that was completely original and around 2008-2009 was delisted and ended up merging with GDH forming GONZO K.K.. Since 2013, they’ve established themselves as a studio that adapts drama, romance and often times eroge visual novels/video games into anime OVA’s and series.  Most notably, Zettai Bōei ReviatanBlade & Soul and the terrible Kimi no Iru Machi from 2012 and 2013. They saved themselves and channeled their illustrators to deliver more of the same.  It’s sad to see that Japanese companies have to do this to survive because I’m all for studios delivering unusual content.  Perhaps a Japanese bank can buy out MANGLOBE’s assets and form a new company that’s set along the same ideas, especially its animators and directors with a well-structured financial perspective.

It would be cool to see a single outside investment entity revitalize these bankrupt companies in order to shift away from generic anime trends with every few years adapt light novel/manga works to recoup any sort of loss.

Space Dandy Marathon [Theatrical Edition]

IMG_3410 IMG_3414 IMG_3416 IMG_3418

it’s been about six months since I started this project. I’ve always wanted to see a full-fledge anime series on the big screen and this was my chance.  Everything went smoothly–Funimation was fantastic to work with and the theatre I worked with really pulled out all the stops in making this a reality.

Two-night run with the first thirteen episodes on Friday and the second set on Saturday–ten hours of Space Dandy was pure bliss not just for me but the other attendees as well. The majority did comprise of my anime club, so quite a few of them have already seen it but what makes it more appealing is the larger screen experience, it being a dine-in theatre and the prizes I pulled together months prior.  Here’s a few of the Space Dandy swag people received!

IMG_2648 IMG_3422

On top of that, attendees that arrived for the first half received a package of ramen noodles and a booklet with re-written reviews of each Space Dandy episode!

Screen Shot 2015-08-26 at 9.01.14 PM

Hosting was something entirely new for me, getting prizes prepared how they would be handed out with a raffle and controlling the media room was exhilarating!  The Bluray editions looked phenomal on the huge screen especially episodes 1, 13 and 21!  I even purchased the Space Dandy jacket and cosplayed as the pompadour space hunter!  English dub with subtitles for added in for the alien dialogue sequences.  With such a small success with attendees, venue and licensing I would certainly do this again.

What do you all want to see on the big screen?

Someone pitched the idea on one of the nights that I should do 4 or 5 episodes of a Halloween-themed anime.

Space Dandy marathon screening

I haven’t been posting on here very much this summer and it’s simply because I’ve been hard at work with Funimation and Screenland Crossroads theaters at a Marathon screening of anime. Most particularly Space Dandy–the best series to air in 2014! Everything on both sides are a “go-ahead”. Not to mention school activities and my job.

There are only 40 seats available but I would like to give a shout out to all my readers about this. It’s a free screening with prizes ranging from the official soundtracks to the series as well as the first half on DVD/bluray in two exclusive sets–the Funimation Boobies Experience and the Aloha Oe Edition that Amazon offers.

With that in mind my anime club is small and am looking for more members to join–working with Funimation among some other licensors in obtaining rights on screenings for the following series/films in the months ahead:

  • Mushishi season 1
  • Shiki
  • Tokyo Godfathers
  • Michiko e hatchin
  • Ergo proxy
  • Psycho-Pass season 1

With school along the horizon for me I’m heading towards yet again another very busy schedule with less and less time for reviews. I’d like to extend an invitation for anyone that is interested in becoming a writer for my blog, please contact me.

BEATSLARS ANIME QUESTION CHALLENGE Episode 1

I’m sure some of you have noticed the new site revamp that’s been rolled out yesterday.  I’m celebrating my 1-year anniversary of having this blog and without further ado I present a challenge!

One of my favorite bloggers since having a wordpress account has been Genki Jason.  As my site covers only animated works his covers a vast amount of observations on live action films.  I highly suggest my readers go on over to his website–  there’s some fascinating films I’ve discovered from his posts!

So upon reading his challenge that he had received a while back with Lynn’s questions I had an idea.  Create a list of 10 questions on the topic of japanese animation and vice-versa.  On top of that Genki Jason picks one series of the first episode I review–  which will be [C] The Money of Soul and Possibility and Control.  I’ve picked one for him as well which you can find here.  Here’s the list he sent me and my answers to them!

1. Which anime made you a fan?

AKIRA [feature film]

vlcsnap-2015-02-04-16h06m33s238 vlcsnap-2015-02-04-16h07m09s87 vlcsnap-2015-02-04-16h07m37s117 vlcsnap-2015-02-04-16h08m31s161

I grew up on so many different series–  but if I had to pick a feature film it would have been Akira.  I’ve always been a huge fan of science fiction stories and that one blew the world of japanese animation wide open for me.  It’s creative, deeply rooted with psychological themes around a governing city about youth reaching out to be heard and accepted.  The main character Kaneda is a struggling 16-year old in a bustling city of crime–  a symbol of defiance towards authority which offers some incredibly hand-drawn rebellious actions by him!  It’s his relationship with Tetsuo that create this amazing contrast–  a defiant yet trusting teenager with a heart of steel is betrayed by a telekinetic Tetsuo that once admired his friends but was unable to catch up to them!

2. What is your favorite anime (movie or TV series)?

COWBOY BEBOP

vlcsnap-2015-02-05-17h03m33s147 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-17h04m42s71 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-17h04m57s216 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-17h05m41s142

Without a doubt its Cowboy Bebop that had been the most influential in regards of television anime series and without it I might not have discovered some amazing shows around it!  Noein–  a series about time travelers.  TRIGUN–  a sci-fi western series that takes heavily from the golden days of cowboy films.

However, Cowboy Bebop is one of few series I can sit down and re-watch regularly.  A series that is very episodic while at the same time accenting a heavy plot about an organization eliminating members wanting to escape from it.  Spike Spiegel is one my favorite characters because of how well he interacts with the various space pirates, police and his rag-tag crew throughout each episode!  Space Dandy is akin to this in so many ways!

4.  Which animation studio is your favorite?

vlcsnap-2015-02-05-13h00m26s188 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-13h09m03s243 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-13h15m35s73 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-13h21m00s241

MADHOUSE

What fascinates me so much about animation studios is how closely connected their employees are.  Mushi Production founded by the godfather of anime,  Osamu Tezuka after leaving Toei Animation Studios in the early 60’s was a sort of mentor to Dezaki.  Osamu Dezaki director of Ashita no Joe and  Rose of Versailles started out as an animator and episode director for Tezuka’s newly formed studio.

Around 1972, Dezaki alongside Galaxy Express 999, Metropolis director Rintaro, Ninja Scroll creator Yoshiaki Kawajiri and MAPPA’s founder Masao Maruyama they formed MADHOUSE.  The studio that housed the biggest names of the industry from the 70’s well into the 2000’s and today!   One of my favorite directors, Satoshi Kon worked alongside these group of animators!

As much as I love what Kyoto Animation is doing with their series and Production I.G. did in handling the nature of Ghost in the Shell series and Psycho-Pass, my favorite has got to be Madhouse.  They’re incredibly varied with so many talented artists all across the board!  Hell, one of my Top series was Tatami Galaxy and I love how cultural styled it was by designing two episodes focused on the Protagonists’ tatami room–  the use of bright colors with the fireworks throughout this series was unparalleled and just astoundingly beautiful!  Such a lively series about college life!

Setting aside Akira as my anime that made me a fan, one that I grew up with was Vampire Hunter D Boodlust.  When was the last time we had a haunting slow-paced vampire story that never set foot into a story with a bright set of tones?  Madhouse handled the designs on this really nicely.  A true romance series with a gritty style to it!

3. Who is your favorite director?

I’ve got two to put down on this list.  This was a very tough question for me as there has been so many powerfully moving series and films over the years that so many directors established at getting across to the viewer so well!

Shinichiro Watanabe

Shinichiro-Watanabe

Starting out as a storyboard writer and episode director at Sunrise Shinichiro Watanabe got his directorial break with Macross Plus.  This was where he met Yoko Kanno and how this would culminate into a friendship that would establish some of the greatest anime series in the industry!

Watanabe controls a strong influence in me because of how deeply involved he is with his works’ music scores.  It’s almost as if the music is telling the story rather than its characters–  I saw that a lot with Sakamichi no Apollon and even last year’s Zankyou no Terror.  His music producing skills are unparalleled–  he’s really got a style all his own making a scene so defining!  What makes me say this is how inspiring he was in Sayo Yamamoto’s directorial debut of Michiko e Hatchin–  talk about a riveting soundtrack that matched up so strongly against the Brazilian backdrop about thugs, police and a woman escaping prison to help a young girl find her father.  He’s directing the sounds that come from every scene and I could almost see him giving his own take at how he would direct to Yamamoto.

Kunihiko Ikuhara

10338

Working on seasons two through four of the original Sailor Moon anime series after Junichi Sato he left Toei Studios after creative differences.  He went on to establish company Be-Papas, the creators of Revolutionary Girl Utena, alongside shojo manga artist Chiho Saito, FLCL script writer Yoji Enokido, producer Okuro Yuuichiro and Chief Animation Director for To Aru Majutsu no Index‘s Hasegawa Shinya. They went on later to develop Mawaru Penguindrum.  As for Ikuhara he drew the storyboards the opening sequences to Nodame Cantabile and coincidentally enough the yuri series Aoi Hana.

I’ve mentioned this before in my Yuri Kuma Arashi posts, but I will say it again here.  His series are not for everyone–  they contain a heavy use of symbolism that surrounds current themes of today, double-entendres, the yuri genre and of course his importance of repeating a scene for an effect of establishing specific character’s potential development.

This director rocks–  he created my second favorite series of all time, Revolutionary Girl Utena and I really like how he uses softly subdued metaphors to get his story progressing further.  He’s risky when he tackles the yuri subject by getting the sound editors to create pure effects against risqué animations underlining heavily sexualized themes.  However, its in his varied characters and his overuse of flashback scenes that evoke such an overwhelming fantastical experience!  Original stories combined with Japanese customs, a touch of pop culture and modern day themes!

5. What is your favorite sequence in an anime?

Princess Mononoke [feature film]

I’m a huge fan of the Studio Chibli films.  For my anime screenings every week, a once-a-month feature length film is shown and the last two I’ve done have been The Wind Rises and Tales of Princess Kaguya.  Both are fantastic films and beautifully animated.  However, Princess Mononoke stands out for me as a strong favorite particularly the scene towards the beginning where a demon advances towards the village and Ashitaka rides on his elk to save everyone from it.

Everything is drawn in such detail and for a 1997 film it looks gorgeous even to today’s standards.  As the angles are swiftly rushing down the hill the film’s musical score brushes in tempo with an engaging horn melody playing as the backdrop!  Such an incredible scene that introduces us to the forest world, the main character Ashitaka and his start to a journey to lift his curse from a demon.

6. What anime has the best use of sound design and soundtrack?

Aku no Hana [Flowers of Evil]

vlcsnap-2015-02-05-13h39m27s52 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-13h39m46s13 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-13h40m01s135 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-13h41m39s141

Generally, animation is done prior to voice recording and sound effects including a series’ soundtrack.  As far as I’ve seen there are only two styles outside of the norm that can add realism to Japanese animation in a monumental way.  Voice recording prior to animation–  Kou Matsuo has a habit for his directorial projects to achieve this.  The only series in his works that I know of so far that he’s done this for have been Natsuyuki RendezvousKure-nai, and Red Garden including it’s OVA Dead Girls.  The other being, rotoscoping.  Live actors are generated into a computer to capture their movements and facial expressions to establish a rare style of storytelling.  Vision of EscaflowneSerial Experiments Lain or even Mushishi would have made this list if it weren’t for Aku no Hana.

This is one of the most frightening psychological series I’ve ever seen for three reasons.  One being that the animation is a rotoscoping technique similar to the U.S. film A Scanner Darkly, two–  Sawa Nakamura’s erratic and abusive behavior stealing this series spotlight, and three–  sound effects.  Sound Director of Mushishi Kazuya Tanaka establishes every scene to near perfection with its eerie atmosphere!  The heavy breathing from Kasuga, the chattering of other students during the classroom scenes were so vibrant!

The most amazing scene out of this is Episode 7 where Nakamura and Kasuga destroy the classroom.  I got chills down my spine from this–  hauntingly beautiful are two destructive teenagers wanting to vent out their frustrations onto the world and with the unique animation style and amazing collection of drum beats, chairs are being tossed around and covering the walls with ink in slow motion ends up very breathtaking.

7. Who is your favorite anime character?

Hmmm…  I really had to think about this.  What makes a character gradually develop over the course of an anime series or feature film that can captivate an audience without being boring.  I’ve decided to separate this as favorite hero and favorite villain.

Favorite Protagonist: Brandon Heat

Ah Gungrave.  This series rocks and its because it is so well-written that we’ve got a huge cast of amazing characters!  Yasuhiro Nightow the creator of Trigun and the upcoming anime adaptation of Blood Blockade Battlefront!

Brandon Heat.  A small-time criminal that works alongside best friend Harry McDowell and three other friends.  After these three friends of theirs are murdered both Brandon and Harry join syndicate group Millennion.  Over the course of this series’ first half we get to see Harry climb the social ladder in the group while Brandon remains loyal at the very bottom being an assassin.  These two balanced each other so well in this series and its the love interest Maria Asagi that allows for Brandon’s development to jump through the roof!  He’s always been a quiet young man and after becoming a Sweeper, killing so many people his relationship with Maria shatters.  I love the amount of foreshadow in this series–  he rejects her only out of love to protect her because while he’s a human he sees himself as a monster.  The second half eludes to his monstrous ways both figuratively and literally really well!  Really enjoyed the ending to this one!

Favorite Antagonist:  Johan Liebert

Anime Series: MONSTER

This is where a series can utilize well over 1 or even 2-cour seasons so well.  We see that greatly with its fantastic view on its main villain Johan and the various ways he goes about sending people to the deepest parts of their hearts.

A master manipulator that never really lifted a finger in this series.  Struck with a tragic past where a doctor ultimately save his life he starts his journey down a path towards becoming a monster filled with hatred.  This guy on the outside may seem calm, compassionate and endearing but underneath it all he’s deceitful and his affection towards children is cruel.

Using others for his own personal gain to carry out what he wants as the end result:  the suffering and death of humanity.  I think the one aspect of Monster that helped fuel this character’s development is how these towns were based on famous places throughout Europe.  The Ruhenheim massacre was a great example of this.

8. Who is your favorite character designer?

moondrive4 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-14h41m53s144 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-14h44m47s71 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-15h15m45s239

Kazuto Nakazawa

Samurai Champloo, Zankyou no Terror, Ashita no Nadja, Sarai-ya Goyō.  In terms of facial expressions he’s one of the most consistent animators at keeping a really strong style throughout a single series!  He’s good at adapting from manga designs too!  Sarai-ya‘s original creator Natsume Ono had a very aged beauty to its designs and Nakazawa was able to get these drawn really well in anime form!  Animating the music video to Linkin Park’s “Breaking The Habit” and he’s had some amazing designs in video games as well–  Tales of Legendia and Devil Kings!

Starting out as an animator and illustrator for the Fatal Fury TV films, he received acclaim for his work on El-Hazard and has served as key animators for series ranging from the late 80’s well into the 90’s up to today!

Something to look out for is his 10-minute animated short Kigeki— about a young girl attempting to repel English invaders from Ireland.  It’s lightly linked to bishounen series and has a slight Tim Burton atmosphere to it.  The inspiration of this animated feature directed and animated by Nakazwa is somewhat pulled from Schubert’s piece “Erlkönig”.

Check it out below!

9. Which genre do you like the most?

JOSEI

vlcsnap-2015-02-05-15h07m33s121 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-15h08m43s126 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-15h11m15s76 vlcsnap-2015-02-05-15h35m52s15

Josei.  Mature storytelling with a romance aspect to it.  Most of the time these animated works feature designs that are more adult in concept and have themes shining around them–  tragedy and realistic relationships centered on deeply rooted characters that often times carry emotional weight.  It has a certain charm to them and is targeted at a more adult audience.  This genre can still have elements of action and comedy.

Paradise Kiss, Usagi Drop, Honey and Clover, NANA, Princess Jellyfish, Michiko e Hatchin, Nodame Cantabile and one of my favorite academic sports series Chihayafuru follows this genre!

10. If you had the chance to remake an anime, which one would you choose?

TRIGUN MAXIMUM

1394419750653

Although the series was fantastic it did deviate from the manga quite a bit.  I would even cover every bit of material from Trigun Maximum.  Run it as a 2-cour series and run on a late-night programming block considering how gruesome this series gets towards its second half of the manga. As for the staff here it would be as follows:

Director:  Morio Asaka

I feel that he would be the best fit for this role because he’s so versatile in everything he’s directed before–  he’s done action–  Gunslinger Girls and Claymore.  He’s done comedy–  Chobits and who can’t forget his talent for the anime adaptation for NANA.  He would be able to provide a strong perspective into a desolate wasteland of cyberpunk and cowboys so well.

Animation Studio: MAPPA

This studio can have a pretty high budget and I think if we started this out as a kickstarter project it would get funded greatly!  MAPPA can give some strongly animated fight sequences–  including Vash dodging bullets all the time.

Character Designer: Kazuto Nakazawa

Hands down he’d be able to adapt some very realistic expressions from Nightow’s manga incredibly well!  Also if he was backed by MAPPA I feel that the upcoming animation studio of the past few years could animate so very solid scenes– especially the Vash and Legato fight!  What would help here with this designer and MAPPA would be the amount of closeup shots of these characters.

Composer: Nakagawa Koutarou featuring movements by Yoko Kanno

Here’s a preview of one of his pieces from GunXSword to get an idea here.

This guy did wonders for GunXSword‘s soundtrack and I can really see him use a similar style of guitar strumming to pull this off with such a dynamic!  Yoko Kanno would provide some key scenes in this series dramatic moments.  Koutarou’s compositions still have a comical feel to them and this would work for the hilarity aspect of this series to come across with Vash’s character!

Art Director: Hidetoshi Kaneko with background art by Atlier BUKA

Not much to say here.  This is one of the best background designing studios in the industry.  Kaneko would return for this adaptation as he did a great job keeping the style of the manga so close to the original anime.  Those buildings from Trigun with a large amount of quality to detail and MAPPA would handle the fluid destruction of towns so well with this!

Script: Sayo Yamamoto

She knows how to direct now but where she really shines is her ability to piece together a continuously engaging narrative.  Keeping in mind this is another adaptation, I think she would do the best job at conveying the characters especially Meryl and Mille.  Giving a contrast between WolfWood and Vash that’s extremely comical and buddy-buddy like.

VOICE CAST: original cast from TRIGUN

As for the cast they would return they were absolutely perfect in Trigun!

I hope you all enjoyed my challenge post!  Look forward to the second half sometime soon where I will be covering the anime series’ first episode of [C] The Money of Should and Possibility Control! Also if anyone wants to partake in a challenge let me know and I’ll be glad to accept it!

Top 10 Best Anime of 2014

Finally I have arrived at post 300!  Every hundred I’ve done a Top 10 and this time I’ve decided to separate this into the following categories of “Best of 2014”:

  • Animation
  • Opening Sequence
  • Ending Sequence
  • Soundtrack
  • Directed Episode
  • Anime Series

This post reflects series that I may not have covered and includes soundtracks to series that have been released in 2014.  Parasyte is not included in this list because it is still an ongoing series, whereas Aldnoah.Zero had split-cour airings.

This was a really tough selection.  I’ve spent weeks on this, trying to figure out a good way to keep this organized for my readers.  I had covered some really incredible series that were all quite varied and some I neglected on my site due to time constraints.  However 2014 was a huge year for a lot of creativity in the industry to shine through.  So for starters I’ll begin with Animation.

TOP 10 BEST OF 2014: ANIMATION

BOKURA WA MINNA KAWAISOU

Animation Studio: BRAINS BASE

If there had been any romantic comedy series I SHOULD have blogged it definitely would be this.  This show has heart, it has comedy that isn’t stale.  A light-hearted series about a young boy moving into a boarding house with other residents, crazy residents.

Kawaisou is witty at times, filled with sexual humor this show doesn’t let up the punches with getting a laugh or two from the viewer.  Usa is a strong male character in this series that has such good chemistry between the bookworm Ritsu.  An anime with charm and its the animation that really pulls this off strong!  Brains Base Animation Production Studio consists of former TMS employees and I can really see the amount of talent they have.  A company that sure has grown from animating 2006’s Innocent Venus to 2011’s Mawaru Penguindrum and now this.  At first glance it looks like an A-1 Pictures project with the large emphasis on bright tones on the character’s faces, the sparkles drawn in so well and the gorgeous background designs!  I recommend anyone that wants to pick up a decent romance series with a ton of comedy to check this one out!

CAPTAIN EARTH

Animation Studio: BONES

Anyone that enjoys STAR DRIVER would appreciate everything this series offers.  The animation is really similar in terms of key animation and character designs.  However this show takes it up a notch with how detailed the Impactors are in this series.  The humans fight against the designer children in space and while you can tell some episodes look better than others they don’t let it distract the viewer from the story.  Shinji Aramaki designed the mechs for this show and just by looking at them they have a nod to 1998’s Gasarki‘s mech designs and STAR DRIVER’s entire basis for its mechs as well.  Aramaki established Star Driver’s ideas–  boys that would control giant robots to save mankind against other robots.  Captain Earth uses the same thought process with prettier animation.

BARAKAMON

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-18h37m14s38 vlcsnap-2014-07-20-11h49m06s235vlcsnap-2014-10-08-12h50m12s41 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-18h43m17s78

Animation Studio: Kinema Citrus

One of the best series that Kinema Citrus ever animated was Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 in 2009 and it really shows up in this slice-of-life comedy series about a calligraphy artist searching for his own creative style.

Barakamon has a relaxing feeling going for it and it certainly helps when you’ve got a group of talented animators on board.  The backgrounds weren’t striking but did give off a rather realistic perspective of the Goto Island.  The dramatic expressions these characters gave off especially the hugging scenes were drawn with incredible detail!

I can really see Kumiko Watanabe’s wonderful work from the Asura film to this.  Dark to something really bright and it paid off extremely well with this anime!

#7

NAGI NO ASUKARA

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-18h55m01s189 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-18h55m26s202 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-18h55m43s117 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-18h56m19s209

Animation Studio: P.A. WORKS

I’ll be honest here–  P.A. Works is one of my favorite studios.  This studio and Kyoto Animation are my fluff companies I turn to when I want to see some solid animation.  While a lot of their series may look rehashed in the original character designs they more than make up for it with how visually appealing the designs in these characters and background art is!  One of my top series of 2011 was Hanasaku Iroha and that had some really well-drawn animated sequences!

Nagi no Asukara is the same way here–  however the stories they choose are often times way too dramatic. This show has an interesting premise about people that live underwater interacting with people on land.  This show focuses more on the romance aspect a bit too much than emphasizing on the livelihood of the social system it builds up between the two cultures.

Those underwater segments were brilliantly animated!

KILL LA KILL

Animation Studio: TRIGGER

I absolutely loved this series and if it weren’t for its generic tropes regarding the villains I would have rated this much higher.  Taking this into account, this was a highly entertaining anime to watch!

A series that focuses on clothing as an integral part of its story in amping up Ryoko and the committee members for some ridiculously overpowered fights!  These character designs were done by Sushio whom worked on key animation for Gurren Lagann and even an episode of Mushishi!

Seeing this and Gurren Lagann you can definitely see similarities in the wide-panel fight scenes, the over-exaggerated on-screen text and quick jumps between mature designs and characters that tend to have a more kawaii look to them where comedy enters in the mix.  Especially with the bubble sleeping scenes with Mako.

Trigger is for the most part a bunch of ex-GAINAX employees.  So if you enjoyed LagannInferno Cop and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt than this action series is right up your alley!

#5

Shingeki no Bahamut: GENESIS

vlcsnap-2014-10-09-12h49m29s128 vlcsnap-2014-11-19-11h32m48s74vlcsnap-2014-12-28-19h46m58s149 vlcsnap-2014-12-31-16h01m30s247

Animation Studio: MAPPA

Formed in 2011, the original founder of Madhouse Animation Studio Masao Maruyama really got onto the map with the jazz-Shinichiro Watanabe series Sakamichi no Apollon.  This studio is known for making some definitive cinematic choices between close up shots to long overview scenes with beautifully drawn background designs!

What initially got me interested in Bahamut was their work on Apollon and Zankyou.  All three of these series could have had their episodes joined together and really feel like a feature film.  I can’t even imagine what sort of funding this studio receives when they start the drafting process for an original work!

Azazel has a really dark bishounen look to him while Favaro and Kaisar could be pulled from a swashbuckling film!  Naoyuki Onda is really talented when it comes to designing characters and he’s sure come a long way from Sol Biana and Gantz to this!  This was my favorite series in 2014 to portray facial expressions, well this and Zankyou no Terror.

#4

PING PONG THE ANIMATION

png00170 png00264vlcsnap-2014-07-07-20h33m00s219 vlcsnap-2014-07-07-21h31m33s6

Animation Studio: Tatsunoko Productions {mostly: Masaaki Yuasa}

This was an extremely hard choice.  Masaaki Yuasa is one of my favorite illustrators in the world of anime.  He’s strikingly different as he takes so many risks that detracts people from seeing his works.  It’s a shame really because for me I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every series he’s created.  Most of the time its really gritty but what it lacks in beauty makes up for with so much heart.  Ping Pong is probably going to be in my Top 10 Favorite anime series of all time because of how realistic it truly is.

Tatsunoko Productions.  This studio has been around for a long time.  If I recall they were established sometime around the 1960’s.  One of the worst series they animated in 2014 was Psycho-Pass 2 however, Ping Pong rocks in every way!  Those table matches were so fluid and while they did have Yuasa’s bizarre designs it came off perfectly with this!

Now I would just love to see Yuasa design a Kunihiko Ikuhara series with music by Naruyoshi Kikuchi.  How about an adaptation of Ohana Holoholo?  Noitamina, are you reading this? *laughs*

MUSHISHI ZOKU SHOU

png00198 vlcsnap-2014-07-03-15h28m31s41vlcsnap-2014-10-28-23h25m17s154 vlcsnap-2015-01-24-19h37m31s109

Animation Studio: Artland Animation Studio

How could this not be on here?  Both seasons 1 and 2 are incredibly detailed.  This is a very talented group of animators that have worked on projects since the 80’s.  Macross character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto and director Noboru Ishiguro whom worked alongside Leiji Matsumoto! [one of the creators of Space Battleship Yamato] Artland split from Marvelous Entertainment in 2010 becoming Artland Animation Studio.

Mushishi is really known for captivating its audience with its atmosphere and this almost 10 year break between seasons really shows the charm they are still able to achieve with this occult detective series!  Slow paced scenes mixed with transparent glowing mushi come together to really tell a strong story visually and its this contrast between deep greens and bright colors that manage to pull this off well.

Looking back on Zoku Shou episodes that pulled the animation so tightly had to be Shimaki Tatsu and the Koten no Hoshi episodes!

#2

ZANKYOU NO TERROR

vlcsnap-2014-07-10-23h55m52s110 vlcsnap-2014-07-31-23h39m32s10vlcsnap-2014-08-21-13h42m03s178 vlcsnap-2014-09-26-14h40m03s172

Animation Studio: MAPPA

Shinichiro Watanabe…this director is probably my favorite in the industry.  He’s written quite possibly some of the greatest stories ever told through animation and considering how Cowboy Bebop is my number 1 favorite anime series it’s no wonder that he needs to have everything come together to really pull this off.

As for the animation we’ve got a strong style with this high school terrorism plot that gives off such a feature film feeling to it.  Just like Bahamut this is another MAPPA series that could be put together as one entire 4-hour film and could work well.  There isn’t one scene that has shoddy animation techniques, every scene is drawn with incredible detail.

In the early 90’s Kazuto Nakazawa did a ton of popular series as a key animator and when Watanabe’s Samurai Champloo came out around 2004 he rose to the top as an acclaimed designer.  If I remember correctly this is the same animator that spear headed the designs for Ashita no Nadja and Sarai-ya Goyō.

You can really see some influence between his character Mugen (Champloo) and Detective Shibazaki (Zankyou).  Strong facial expressions illustrate how Sphinx’s bombings affect the other people in this show and it really delivers a strong performance overall.  Powerfully moving series with beautifully animated sequences helps put this series up at the top for me!

Space Dandy

Animation Studio: BONES

It’s to no surprise that this series made this list being that this was the first Shinichiro Watanabe production that aired in 2014.  I am all for a unique style or rather studios that takes risks.  This had such a huge staff credited and it was different for each episode!  Most of the key animators that worked on this BONES project worked on Cowboy Bebop and there had been quite a few easter eggs thrown in to establish this quite effectively!  The main character designer Yoshiyuki Ito most known for his work on Full Metal Alchemist first season and STAR DRIVER delivered his best drawings for this well-written science fiction series!  We also had some strong level of talent–  Masaaki Yuasa, Sayo Yamamoto, Ryo Kono the art Director for the opening sequence and created the designs to Yojō-Han Shinwa Taikei!  What amazed me the most was with the animation department.

How every planet and every alien had been designed by different animators!  Loved the background art for episode 21 by Santiago Montiel.  The design of the Aloha Oe was done by French animator Thomas Romain!  Considering how the focus of this series was to broadcast it worldwide, Watanabe from the very beginning wanted Space Dandy to be developed by talent from all over the world and it pays off with varied aliens every episode, stunning drawings of the planets and unique concepts for the ships, the characters and stories that were contained in them!  Fans of Cowboy BebopSamurai ChamplooSakamichi no Apollon and 80’s sci-fi films should give this series the attention it deserves, baby!

TOP 10 BEST OF 2014: OPENING SEQUENCE

#10

Aldnoah.Zero OP 1:  Heavenly Blue by KALAFINA

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h41m23s124 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h40m43s234

Ah Kalafina, this band is amazing.  Formed by Japanese composer Yuki Kajiura.  You can really tell the orchestral style that she uses in her works because I can distinctly hear from a lot of her songs music from Noir in this.  Magia is probably one of the most popular songs this band has ever done, but this really pulled through in the drama side of this mecha series quite well.  The visuals are gorgeous that match up with this and I really enjoyed the closeup scenes of Slaine and Inaho gearing up for battle.

#9

Hōzuki no Reitetsu OP 1:  “Jigoku no Sata mo Kimi Shidai” by Jigoku no Sata All Stars

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h42m47s197 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h44m03s179

This was one of the weirdest songs I’ve ever heard. No, really.  I’m serious.  The main cast dances and sings along to the song. And its the visual style here that depicts the crazy adventures these demons have within hell.  Really unique song and animation that WIT STUDIO used.  Great comedy series.  Perhaps a re-watch is in order so that I can catalog this one on the site.

#8

KILL LA KILL OP 2: “Sirius” by Eir Aoi

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h45m43s160 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h46m07s141

A generic anime song.  However, it’s Aoi’s vocals and TRIGGER’s style that pushes this to the max with this opening sequence.  Clothing is so prevalent in this series and it’s these collection of scenes mixed in that give the viewer exactly what its looking for going into the second half!  Also, a good lead into the series villain Ragyou.

#7

M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane OP 2:  “Replica” by Maaya Sakamoto

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h47m49s147 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h48m51s4

This is one of my favorite Sakamoto songs to date because of the underlying chorus in the background.  The visuals illustrate the tone that this Junichi Sato series will be dark.  Regardless of how bad this show had ended up, its this opening segment that somewhat establishes some connection with the plot favorably to me.

As it shows a grown up Akashi playing with the very kids he’s forgotten about and the dark metal that seeps throughout this opening scene was drawn really well.  It’s the darkness that overshadows the happiest moments in his life:  A good theme as it gradually presents itself going into the second half!

#6

PSYCHO-PASS 2 OP: “Enigmatic Feeling” by Ling Tosite Sigure

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h52m14s230 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h53m08s231

These next two are quite similar and this was really hard to decide which one I liked better. The visuals were nicely done and probably better than the whole show.

I like how Kougami is placed as a shadow in the background to illustrate that he’s never left Akane’s thoughts.  The song rocks.  Ling Tosite Sigure is back from Season 1 to give us a highly experiment screaming to whisper melancholic song about what is it that makes people go crazy.

#5

Tokyo Ghoul OP: “Unravel” by Ling Tosite Sigure

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h14m41s245 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h15m01s241

At the very beginning of this Tokyo Ghoul shows off that Kaneki once had a normal life but is suddenly shattered by the women he finds attractive.  The reversal here is what makes this one of my Top of 2014.

The characters walking along at a slow pace while a mirror of their ghoul selves reveals their other identity.  Strikingly bright quinques really show off the talented animators that worked on this OP and was without a doubt my favorite part of this.

#4

Samurai Flamenco OP 2: “Bye Bye Bye Shot Down Love Love Love” by FLOW

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h58m22s72 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-19h59m42s97

Manglobe.  This studio was awesome in 2008 with Michiko e Hatchin.  What happened to them following was a mess of moe shows with no substance.  What attracted me to this opening was how much it shifts between normalcy and downright bizarre.  Mineral Miracle Muse snapping their fingers while the Flamengers have their hands shown:  teamwork that pays off in hilarity throughout this oddball tokusatsu series.  Flow did incredible work at making this song fit with the acting drama side of this series!

#3

Zankyou no Terror OP: “Trigger” by Yuuki Ozaki

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h01m45s47 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h02m13s65

This song is beautiful.  The animation is top notch just like the series, and I really like how there are all these parallels between the Savant Syndrome that gets brought up later on in Zankyou in this opening.  Lisa running through the city as the camera followed was gorgeous and those crows flying up in the sky really illustrate that Nine and Twelve were both far away from any home they could connect to.  Five being the white bird was a nice touch here too.  My favorite opening of the summer 2014 season and easily one of the best of that year!  Yuuki Ozaki has a strong voice and it comes off really well in the livetuning that is added to the quick tempo beats in the instrumentals!

#2

Ping Pong The Animation OP: “Tada Hitori” (唯一人) by Bakudan Johnny

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h04m20s56 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h05m58s253

Shinya Orihara one of the best animators in the industry right now tackles this.  TekkinkonkreetAkira, numerous Studio Chibli films including Howl’s Moving Castle, and the most recent Giovanni’s Island.  This guy is incredible at creating drawings that are rough and complex while the fluidity of the animation is highly detailed!  This was miles ahead of anything we had airing alongside Ping Pong!  Considering how the first two episodes were just a black and white panel montage its no wonder it took some time to get this opening finished by the third one!  Amazing!  Bakudan Johnny began under an indie label around 2011 but ended up making their debut with this song.

#1

Mushishi Zoku Shou OP: “Shiver” by Lucy Rose

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h07m23s109 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h07m57s190

Similar in the way that the first season’s opening was done by Scottish artist Ally Kerr:  Zoku Shou uses a non-Japanese artist yet again.  The song Shiver uses Lucy Rose a singer-songwriter from England.  Easily the most beautiful song and animation we had all year.  A closeup of nature and those flower petals and the transition into fall and winter strongly shows off the atmosphere that Mushishi has.  The acoustic guitar strumming along with the powerful lyrics gives us this gentle perspective about life and what we might be missing.

TOP 10 BEST OF 2014: ENDING SEQUENCE

#10

Aldnoah.Zero ED 1: “A/Z” by Hiroyuki Sawano/ vocals by Mizuki

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h15m25s70 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h16m17s74

This song is especially powerful because of how dramatic this mecha series is.  Actually both endings should really be up here for how good they are.  However, the water-color like drawings here capture the struggles the kids are having going into battle.  I like where Asseylum is standing with the reflection of the water below showing the Princess side of herself.  Mizuki pours really strong vocals into this!

Captain Earth ED 2:  “The Glory Days” by Tia

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h17m25s232 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h17m52s239

Life outside of fighting and this is the style I like! Oh my goodness!  The animation was awesome in this one!  Daichi and the others cleaning the Earth Engine Impactor and I like how fun and childish it is!  This was so refreshing here!

M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane ED 1: “Ego-izm” by La La Larks

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h20m24s238 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h21m08s158

Originally from the band School Food Punishment, Yumi Uchimura returns with powerful vocals along with her sound producer and keyboardist Ryo Eguchi.  This sounds just like School Food Punishment and I’m glad to see this revitalized here!  The animation is drawn well and I like the background art of the Lightless Realm, everything just comes off as smooth here.

#7

Space Dandy ED: “”Welcome to the X Dimension” by Etsuko Yakushimaru

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h22m39s27 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h23m39s124

The Parallel Dimension theory.  Multiple Dandys being transported through transparent boxes.  What a strange and messy style but for as comedic and odd this show is it works.  Etsuko’s vocals reminds me a lot of the soft voice of Bonjour Suzuki from Yuri Kuma Arashi‘s op.  This song has a certain sway to it that it similar to some of her other pieces especially Arakawa Under the Bridge.

#6

Shingeki no Bahamut: GENESIS ED: “Promised Land” by Risa Shimizu

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h26m36s104 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h26m54s31

This rocks!  Sayo Yamamoto single-handedly gave us the best ending of the Fall 2014 Season with this.  The animation has that Fujiko Mine series style to it and it left me breathless.  Amira twirling was incredibly animated with a rather stop motion technique against a very detailed background.  The lyrics are emotionally moving and after seeing the series it explains the adventure side of this so well in regards to Amira’s character.  She’s a child and she wants to continue to learn about the world with Favaro.  What a great way to illustrate this through the sepia tone artwork of the mother and her dancing escape into unknown lands.

#5

Gin no Saji Second Season ED: “”Oto no Naru Hō e” by Goose house

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h28m55s240 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h29m29s64

A catchy song, bright animation all of which that features agriculture life so well.  I loved this Noitamina series and I do hope there will be another season of it in the future.  This ending was better than the first season’s because of how Goose House delivered a somewhat family style aspect with the vocals.  Which is a big part of what this series is about.  The still animated shots of Mikage, Hachiken and the rest of the crew were well-drawn!  Nerawareta Gakuen director Ryosuke Nakamura handled this ending nicely.

#4

Mushishi Zoku Shou ED: various endings by composer Toshio Masuda

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h36m16s21 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h34m55s234

Every ending connects with each episode seamlessly.  I think this might be the only episodic anime to tackle this well.  Traditional soundtrack to create an engaging atmosphere to the very end.

#3

Barakamon ED: “Innocence” by NoisyCell

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h38m31s106 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h39m47s96

This band is sure making a name for themselves with their rock sounds between light-hearted comedy series to this season’s Death Parade.  I’m not so sure as to who directed this ending sequence but one thing is for sure that the animation was incredible here.  The very detailed characters without color against a brown backdrop was stunning!

#2

Ping Pong The Animation ED: “”Bokura ni Tsuite” (僕らについて) by Merengue

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h44m01s81 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h44m20s11

What a neat song!  Eunyoung Choi is one of my favorite animators that reminds me a lot of Masaaki Yuasa’s style a lot.  She’s really detailed and it shows a lot where her influence has switched over the years from doing Black Lagoon to Yuasa’s numerous rough projects.  Its clearly seen between her episode 9 of Space Dandy and Yuasa’s episode 16 of the same series!  Kemenozume and Kaiba looks to be the biggest inspiration in her repertoire as we see with this ending.  Her work on episode 10 of Yojō-Han Shinwa Taikei was fantastic as well but this ending is one of her best!  The camera doing a time lapse along the walkway as the cars driving past was beautiful.  The pov car part of this was great–  not every car that is seen is fully drawn in but still gets to telling the big picture of what the animation is trying to convey perfectly!  Like most of Yuasa’s works, its not for everyone as it does have a messy look to it but underneath it all its an ending like this that can capture normal life outside of pong competitions so well!

The song is upbeat and has two versions one that’s a little lower on the drum beats.  However, both are incredibly well-done and I really hope to see more great things from Eunyoung Choi in the future!

Zankyou no Terror ED: “Dare ka, umi o.” by Aimer

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h42m51s142 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h43m27s239

Aimer has such a beautiful strong voice.  Yuki Uchimura and her are my two favorite female singers in the japanese scene right now.  Powerful lyrics about being saved matched up to Lisa falling in the water being drowned by the two crows flying away. Fujiko Mine animator Takeshi Koike pulled off one amazing ending! I absolutely love the penciled in water.  The level of detail on this was incredible!

TOP 10 BEST OF 2014: SOUNDTRACK

The music in an anime series is pivotal in getting the right message across.  These 10 series provided just enough to give a really strong impact in a particular scene and even where there had been parts to an episode that didn’t have any dialogue.  Here are my Top 10 for best soundtrack!

#10

Gokukoku no Buryunhirude

Composer: Nao Tokisawa

One of Nao’s first musical scores.  He’s brand new on the scene and I think the only other anime scores he’s ever arranged were from Kiniro + Mosaic.

I have to say this guy did a tremendous job at making a dark tone match up with the plot of this really well.  Dubstep, I’ve really gotten interested in this genre of music since this score and Kiseiju also did a fine job at it as well!  Good to see these artists doing something creative in the business by shifting away from an entirely piano midi soundtrack!

#9

Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii

Composer: Kousuke Yamashita

If there was any composer that could create a truly inspirational collection of songs its this guy. I loved what he did with Chihayafuru, if it weren’t for its soundtrack I don’t believe I would have enjoyed that series as much as I did.  With Soredemo, he continues his success in writing orchestral compositions with such an uplifting theme around them.  If Skip Beat! were ever to be re-done I would love to hear this guy do the music for that series.  Such a romantic calming style between stringed instruments and a lovely horn section.

#8

Shingeki no Bahamut: GENESIS

Composer: Yoshihiro Ike

One of my favorite orchestra composers on feature films.  Asura was a tough film to watch but what gave it more of an emotional quality to it was its music score.

Ah man, the Ergo Proxy score was eerie, while the Karas OAV was powerfully engaging.  Tiger & Bunny gave a lot of inspiration to Bahamut‘s soundtrack here with the strong chorus melodies and rough quickly-paced string movements.

#7

Tokyo Ghoul

Composer: Yutaka Yamada

Brand new in the anime industry and Tokyo Ghoul is the only thing he’s ever done!  I hope to see great things from this composer.  He worked with Hiroyuki Sawano in 2011 on the drama Marumo no Okite, and I can clearly see how much Sawano inspired him with this score.  A mix of bass beats and sometimes techno with a beautiful chorus line that is used in the background.  The violins deliver striking sounds to create this etherial sound mixed with a bit of rock.  Really cool.

#6

Kill la Kill

Composer:  Hiroyuki Sawano

While this guy as I’ve said before isn’t varied, he does have high energy.  Strong chorus pieces matched up perfectly to Trigger’s animation.  Wouldn’t have asked for a better composer for this series.  The style Trigger uses is bold and Sawano’s music is very energetic and dramatic.  Loved this!

#5

Aldnoah.Zero

Composer: Hiroyuki Sawano

It’s no big surprise that both his works made it on this list.  You could switch between the scores in both series and they would have probably offered the same result impact-wise.  I think what made me like this more was his energy on the song “Alliez” and the amazing piece they used throughout the battles “MKAlliez” and “Z-Kat”.  When it comes to writing with other singers he’s got a gift of using their voices to their full potential.  Perhaps he should teach Kanon Wakeshima [Selector Infected WIXOSS OP] a thing or two about singing.

#4

Ping Pong The Animation

Composer: Kensuke Ushio

Freaking amazing!  This was single-handedly the best music of the Spring 2014 season!  I actually had a difficult time trying to figure out where to place this on my list here.  Unique and messy just like the animation or rather Masaaki Yuasa’s style.  It screams potential while at the same time has such a strength to it that drives the characters motivations so solid!  It really pushed this story to its limits and enhanced those pong matches especially Peco’s match against Kazama the Dragon!

#3

Mushishi Zoku Shou

Composer: Toshio Masuda

Is there really anything to say here?  This artist is able to use a traditional style from Japan and really give life to the atmosphere of the show as a whole ridiculously well.  Very soothing collection of melodies that plays throughout this series and if this series makes another return I hope that he does the music for it!

#2

Zankyou no Terror

Composer: Yoko Kanno

She is my favorite composer of all time.  This is without a doubt her best work and she’s got talent for knowing exactly how to develop what’s needed for a particular scene.  Which in Zankyou‘s case was everything about the show–  it was all about how it would look to the audience.  The sound was an astonishing extra that really pulled out Nine and Twelve’s feelings so well!  Not to mention Lisa’s worsening situation as the story progressed!

#1

Space Dandy

Composers:

  • DOKAKA
  • Fujimaru Yoshino
  • Hiroshi Kawanabe
  • Hiroyuki Namba
  • Izumi Macra
  • Junk Fujiyama
  • KenKen
  • Kensuke Ushio
  • Kouichirou Tashiro

  • Taro Umebayashi
  • Tomonori Hayashibe
  • TUCKER
  • Yasuyuki Okamura
  • Yoko Kanno
  • ZEN-LA-ROCK
  • OGRE YOU ASSHOLE
  • Seiichi Nagai

This is some list.  We’ve got Okamura, whom hasn’t done anything in five years and before that he’s had an absence from singing since the early 2000’s from a drug arrest.  These are some of the best of the best in Japanese music!  It’s such an eclectic mix between jazz bands, techno groups and j-pop idols.  Hands down the amount of creativity throughout this series wasn’t just the worldwide animators that worked on Space Dandy but it’s monumental success came from its varied soundtrack. “I should be..” was the most emotional songs out of the entire series and while a lot of it is very in key with the obscurity of the show between guitar riffs and stylized electronic downbeats this show’s score remains incredibly different from anything we had of 2014!  Unique and a series that from the get-go that takes risks!  Let’s see more of this in the future!

TOP 10 BEST OF 2014: DIRECTED EPISODES

Before I go into overall what series were the best of 2014, I want to jump even deeper into individual episodes.  We had tons of incredible episodes even from one particular series, so compiling my Top 10 on this was rather challenging.

#10

Kill la Kill Episode 5 “Trigger”

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h48m44s89 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h48m59s240 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h49m29s19 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-20h51m29s209

This show introduced the coolest character out of any that this series presented itself with.  Tsumugu Kingase.  From the very beginning we see him destroying the garden club’s flowers and this guy just oozes cool. His confrontation with Ryoko was more than enough to bond her and Senketsu even further!

#9

Samurai Flamenco Episode 19 “The Quiet Life”

png00076 png00077 png00078 png00079

Everything has settled down after Samurai Flamenco’s fight against the Will of the Universe.  We are finally back to what this series shines in–  real drama.  While the tokusatsu aspect of this show remains we were finally given the reveal of Goto’s girlfriend and its a doozy.  Mari was my favorite character of this particularly because of this episode alone.  She’s crazy.  Her reaction when she finds out about Goto’s cellphone is probably the most authentic this show could catch up to.  It also helps the Masayoshi was conflicted on what to do.  He’s been trapped inside his own world for so long he doesn’t understand how to get grounded back towards reality and help his friend.

#8

Shingeki no Bahamut: GENESIS Episode 3 “Fog of Nebelville”

vlcsnap-2014-10-20-23h37m15s155 vlcsnap-2014-10-20-23h37m41s151vlcsnap-2014-12-31-16h46m23s73 vlcsnap-2014-10-20-23h41m23s83

This is how to do a zombie episode!  This series is packed with so much adventure and this episode brought into the mix Rita as a great contrast between Favaro and Kaisar.  She’s a necromancer and I like how she shows up.  Disillusioned by the family she lives with and the other villagers–  she has grown accustomed to her life.  When Favaro and Amira show up for the bounty they are also illusioned by the fog that everything is normal.  Nothing truly is what it seems and there were so many parallels between Kaisar’s upbringing and Rita’s that it left this large impact of trust between the two of them exceptionally well.  This was my favorite episode of the series and I wished that we had more like it!  Hope a season 2 dives into more adventures with its episodes!

#7

Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii Episode 3 “Chancellor’s Declaration”

png00220 png00221 png00222 png00223

Livius and Nike’s relationship is progressing only after knowing each other for some time–  I like all the duties the future queen must uphold.  She’s horrible at them and really irritates the King’s staff!  I like how there is this huge transition from the dead mother cliche into Nike’s own reasons for being with him.  Loving someone out of protection and this is what Livius gains here in trying to understand her more.  A similarity between the two that both show it in different ways.  I’m glad that this episode was placed much earlier rather than later.

#6

Nisekoi Episode 1 “The Promise”

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h01m27s21 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h01m34s110 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h01m50s85 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h02m28s141

This show is really funny in a romantic way.  SHAFT pulled out all the stops in animating this without so many of their usual peculiar animated angles. Raku in appeasing with his yakuza boss’ wishes he pretends to date Chitoge.  The love triangle begins with a promise made 10 years earlier to another possible girl Kosaki Onodera (the girl he really likes).  This was a nice start to a somewhat bothersome situation that Raku is put into as more girls are involved with keys that match his locket.

#5

SPACE DANDY Episode 13 “Even Vacuum Cleaners Fall in Love, Baby”

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h07m00s43 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h07m05s101 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h07m13s180 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h08m47s92

I’ll be honest right here.  I wanted to put up all the episodes of Space Dandy within this post, because they were all fantastic!  However, there was something special with this episode.

This was a great end to the first half–  a story that focuses on QT.  A robot that can fall in love.  The animation was unlike anything we had of the previous twelve episodes and had an amazing collection of music attached to it!  Reminds me a lot of the Brave Little Toaster only this story fueled it up by hitting all the right notes with QT’s behavior towards Maker gradually transitioning towards human emotions. The giant robot at the end was brilliantly animated!

#4

Mushishi Zoku Shou Episode 4 “The Hand That Caresses the Night”

png00244 png00245 png00246 png00247

The first episode of Zoku Shou that delivered a really dark theme.  Tatsu is able to lure animals for hunting but the catch is that the meat has rotten.  Powerful!  Ginko frightened by whatever it is that has swayed Tatsu with such an intent on killing.  What a nice idea to use crows as the strong symbol that something bad was going to happen!  My favorite part of this was the scene where Tatsu is about to be attacked by a group of crows!  Ah that animation!  Breathtaking!

#3

Tokyo Ghoul Episode 1 “Tragedy”

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h22m27s103 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h22m57s181 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h23m07s0 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-21h23m15s73

I wasn’t all that impressed with this series considering how rushed it was by its later episodes.  However, its premiere was a really strong one!  Kaneki is enamored with Rize that sets up the fantastic date they have.  Wonderful way to turn this around by using her as the ghoul and killing Kaneki of any normal life he could have had.

#2

Ping Pong the Animation Episode 10 “I Thought You Were the Hero!!”

vlcsnap-2014-07-07-20h32m15s29 vlcsnap-2014-07-07-20h32m46s80 vlcsnap-2014-07-07-20h33m00s219 vlcsnap-2014-07-07-20h33m18s148

Kazama and Peco’s pong match while Tsukimoto is left nowhere to be seen.  I like how this plays in Tsukimoto’s favor that he is really intuitive.  As visually stunning as this was for me–  it gave me chills with how varied the camera angles were!  This episode was all about passion and what reasons the players have for playing pong.  Kazama had held on a desire to win for the sake of achieving greatness whereas Peco does it out of fun.  I like how the match tells the story for the two of them and how Kazama basically crosses over to the other side in understanding how Peco feels about the game.  There also was so much symbolism in this episode–  the birds flying to signify the face-off between the two of them, the slow motion sequence of Kazama rolling the ball.  Yuasa’s best episode this series hands down–  it was so intense!

#1

Zankyou no Terror Episode 1 “Falling”

vlcsnap-2014-07-10-23h54m04s6 vlcsnap-2014-07-10-23h54m28s228 vlcsnap-2014-07-10-23h54m49s204 vlcsnap-2014-07-10-23h55m52s110

A series about a terrorist attack that devastates the Shinjuku area of Japan.  What starts off as an action sequence of the two boys stealing plutonium at a nuclear reactor transitions wonderfully into the school setting and winds up with a giant building being blown up!  The visuals, the musical score, the dialogue, everything came together perfectly to start up this chilling story about kids that had been discarded, neglected and finally getting the chance to redeem themselves in their own ways!  This was the most intense episode I had seen all year!

Now that I’ve jumped into those categories its time to talk about the best series that aired for 2014.  I’ve decided that I wanted to keep this short but sweet.

TOP 10 BEST ANIME SERIES OF 2014!

#10

Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii

vlcsnap-2014-09-21-13h58m11s177 vlcsnap-2014-09-22-16h28m22s117

A series that has revitalized the shojo genre for me.  It’s a light-hearted series about a King and princess and the hardships they endure as they progress their relationship towards marriage.

#9

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou

vlcsnap-2015-01-29-18h20m18s113 vlcsnap-2015-01-29-18h28m16s34

I really wish I had blogged this series when it aired in the spring.  It’s a wild romantic comedy series with charm and stunning visuals!

BARAKAMON

vlcsnap-2014-10-08-13h37m40s86 vlcsnap-2014-10-08-12h53m27s185

Washed out calligrapher Seishu Handa arrives on an island by request only to discover a new style all his own and finds some friends along the way.  This was written in two halves each episode that gave a refreshing look at life away from technology and focuses on the nurturing side of life.

#7

Captain Earth

png00151 vlcsnap-2014-09-22-19h41m55s2

From the same creators that brought you STAR DRIVER.  This series tackles an invasion from beings known as Planetary Gears.  What this series did well was progress these young teens into adults by using mechs at the forefront!  The songs provided the power aspect that this team is known for with their other works!  I really enjoyed the relationship Daichi had with Hana.  Akari was awesome!

#6

Samurai Flamenco

samurai-flamenco-1 png00124

A lot of people I know did not like this series at all.  Its first half was a realistic perspective of a young actor that wanted to become the superhero he’s always aspired to be.  And by acting in television dramas that had these sort of characters.  The second half more so episode 7 completely changes things into a tried and true Tokusatsu series!  Randomly ambitious and the Mineral Miracle Muse trio were the highlight of every episode they were in!

#5

KILL LA KILL

vlcsnap-2014-08-28-19h27m13s194 vlcsnap-2014-08-28-20h41m41s91

Akin to Gurren Laggan, this series develops the idea that uniforms gives someone their power.  This is a series that illustrates the mahou shojo genre fairly well as it piles on with each episode a fierce performance with the intention of being brashly seductive!  Visually its a highly intensified series with a grandiose soundtrack!

#4

Ping Pong The Animation

png00310 vlcsnap-2014-07-07-21h30m43s41

One of my favorite directors adapts Taiyo Matsumoto’s ’96 manga series about pong players at various academies.  This is how to write a 1-cour series! Brush off any ideas you have of thinking this show is going to be pretty.  It’s not.  While I really liked this animation and as I’ve said before it’s not for everyone.  This is an unsentimental series that represents itself as an authentic and inexplicably-animated view of high-school life.  Ping Pong succeeded in being one of the best sports series out there!

#3

Zankyou no Terror [Terror in Tokyo]

vlcsnap-2014-09-27-16h22m20s80 vlcsnap-2014-09-27-19h02m28s153

A visually stunning narrative that explores the idea of terrorism on Japanese soil. A nihilistic journey towards retribution with a lot of exposition on 9/11.  I enjoyed this series a ton for how creative it was.

#2

Mushishi Zoku Shou

vlcsnap-2015-01-02-18h44m23s205 vlcsnap-2015-01-02-10h35m11s80

This show is beautiful.  Music, animation, characters and the story are just absolutely amazing! Every part of it comes together perfectly.  Individual tales that follow Ginko and his travels across lands while discovering Mushi.  I actually enjoyed this season much more than the first one–  we had some incredible stories!  Some dark, some light-hearted but by the end of them they arrive to one central theme: survival. I would recommend this series to anyone!

My family watches this one!

Space Dandy

Ok here goes.

Moe, moe, moe, that’s all the industry thinks anime fans like these days.  It does sell well and Sword Art Online is a perfect example of achieving sales.  However, the plot can often times jump ship or crack down its second half.  And then there are those rare times it does work for the case of Kawaisou and Nisekoi which my reasons are stated clearly above. But you know what I think?  You know, the staff that throw it in all willy nilly in their series.  They’re idiots.  Show me a tsundere loving-man and I’ll show you a no-brain, no-class, timid otaku that knows nothing of a quality anime.  I guess I don’t get it.  You gotta take risks, jump for a surprise! You can’t have a well-structured anime series just by female characters’ appearances and personalities alone! No! There are far more important things to consider.  It’s all about everything coming together as one, baby.  Viva All. ~Stay Dandy

Every episode is crafted together with so many different creative styles arriving at one point.  This provides some unique planets that Dandy travels to, strange aliens and the comedy never lets up!  A pivotal series that revitalizes the space opera genre with such worldwide success!

I hope that someday this ‘may be continued’…

Well that’s it!  My 300th blog post.  Now onto continuing the series of 2015 and of course all the other series I’m way behind on writing about.  Hope you all liked reading this.

Winter 2015 Season Preview [ongoing]

I am quite behind on a few series–  Shigatsu wa Kimi no UsoSailor MoonGaro and Mushishi Zoku Shou.  Eventually I will get to finishing these posts.  Once I hit my 300th post I will be discussing the Top 10 2014 Categories which will include the following for a Top 10 Best of list:

  • Anime Series
  • Directed Episodes
  • Director
  • Soundtrack
  • Animation
  • Character

More on that later.  Now it’s been a few days since the official winter anime season has begun as we’ve had a few series out and some that look promising on the horizon.  Time to start the list!

  • DIRECTOR: Atsushi Nakayama
  • ORIGINAL CREATOR: Takumi Hiragi-Boshi
  • SERIES COMPOSITION: Takamitsu Kouno
  • CHARACTER DESIGNER: Keiichi Sano;
  • ORIGINAL CHARACTER DESIGNER: Yu Asaba
  • MUSIC: Atsushi Hirasawa

This is one of the first series to premiere and definitely not a series that has me interested at first glance but I will at least give it a chance.  This director has done a ton of harem series in the past and considering how this actually marks the first time he’ll be working on an entire series.  This doesn’t bode well for it.  Animators of Infinite Stratos will guarantee this show will be chock full of ecchi and at times very gorgeous in background designs.  The composer I have never heard of and I believe it might be the first time we them working on a full-fledged anime series rather than a collection of OVAs.

It’s a cry and shame that Gen Urobuchi could not have worked on the second season of Psycho-Pass.  However, good to see him get the ball rolling on newly produced works like Aldnoah.Zero—  very creative to use two different sides that are raised on different planets to settle the score in hopes of regaining their own humanity on their own terms.

The mecha series returns after a season break and reunites the entire staff of the first one.  This was probably one series that turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of 2014 as it progressed!  Not much to say only that I hope Urobuchi along with Fate/Zero director has ideas up their sleeves to make this more intriguing than its first half!

This is probably one of the most anticipated series of the season for me.  I loved the OVA from the Mirai Project back in 2013 and everyone from that is returning to develop this show here!  Judging by the PVs shown of this I get the feeling we will be getting another episodic series similar to what Mushishi Zoku Shou offered us last year.

I just hope this team can pull off individually what they did with that OVA feature by creating a dark atmosphere considering this show’s main theme is about death and the humans that come to terms with it.  We’ve also got an incredible seiyu for episode 1–  Kazuya Nakai that played Karasu of 2006’s sci-fi anime Noein.

DURARARA!!X2 SHOU

durararax2

  • PRODUCTION STUDIO: Studio Shuka
  • DIRECTOR: Takahiro Omori
  • ORIGINAL CREATOR: Ryohgo Narita
  • SERIES COMPOSITION: Yuzuru Tachikawa
  • CHARACTER DESIGNER: Shinichi Kurita
  • MUSIC: Yuuki Hayashi

I enjoyed the first season of this a ton especially most of Omori’s works because of how well he adapts the manga in terms of characterization.  Baccano! was proof of this.  A series that introduced a large cast of characters each with their own motives and personalities that didn’t suffer as it progressed and remained completely refreshing.  Ikebukuro received an in-depth view of the city its set in and we once again return but I’ve got some qualms with the staff a bit here.

It’s changed as an entirely brand new animation studio will be producing the animation here.  Aside from that the director of Baccano!, the first season of Durarara!!, and the more recent Samurai Flamenco he will be tackling the directing of this.  Including the other 2 cours that are slated for later this year and 2016.

Character designer Kurita worked on Noein and Macross Zero OAV, so hopefully he will be able to shift the dynamic this new studio will have on this second season skillfully.

  • DIRECTOR: Akitaro Daichi
  • ORIGINAL CREATOR: Julietta Suzuki
  • SERIES COMPOSITION: Akitaro Daichi
  • CHARACTER DESIGNER: Junko Yamanaka
  • MUSIC: Toshio Masuda

One of the last remaining good comedy shoujo series out there.  A story about a teenage girl that becomes the local land god and serves as master for Tomoe, a fox yokai.  This show was very funny and pressed on the ideas about Japanese deities than any other series we had in 2012!

Glad to have this series back and hopefully the reuniting staff here will adapt Suzuki’s manga well. One of the best opening songs of 2012 too!  Really catchy!

KANTAI COLLECTION -KAN COLLE-

  • PRODUCTION STUDIO: Diomedea
  • DIRECTOR: Keizou Kusakawa
  • ORIGINAL CREATOR: Kensuke Tanaka
  • SERIES COMPOSITION: Jukki Hanada
  • CHARACTER DESIGNER: Mayuko Matsumoto and Naomi Ide
  • MUSIC: Natsumi Kameoka

This is a prime example of a series that I can see doing extremely well in sales due to its content just as Sword Art Online has or even Idolmaster.

Not really sure about this one because of the director in how he adapts series.  Based on an online japanese card game in the same way that Shingeki no Bahamut was but this has spawned various dojin, manga, and light novels.  Featuring the original voice cast of the game I wonder if the dialogue will be any good for this.

Campione! and Ro-Kyo-Bu!’s director Keizou Kusakawa will be directing this and based on his repertoire not much has been developed than action, drama, harem fan service anime series.  Heck 2008 had one of the worst series and that ended in absolute failure–  Sekirei, a series with the plot loosely developed in the background against girls in skimpy outfits.

ROLLING GIRLS

  • PRODUCTION STUDIO: Wit Studio
  • DIRECTOR: Kotomi Deai
  • ORIGINAL CREATOR:
  • SERIES COMPOSITION: Yasuyuki Muto
  • CHARACTER DESIGNER: Katsuhiko Kitada
  • ORIGINAL CHARACTER DESIGNER: tanu
  • MUSIC: Masaru Yokoyama

Kotomi Deai worked alongside Tomohiko Ito to direct Gin no Saji’s second season and that was one of the best series of 2014!  Without any assistance from another director this time around I am curious how she will be able to tackle this. She’s a fantastic episode director that worked on some really solid episodes of Ergo Proxy and the most ambitious episodes of  one of my favorites Michiko e Hatchin!

What grabbed my interest immediately was the fact that Shingeki no Kyojin‘s animation studio will be producing this!  It looks incredibly beautiful and really different than what that series looked like!  Out are the thick lines that Kyojin had an here we’ve got tones of some really bright colors!  And then there is the music composer to one of the best soundtracks of 2014’s fall season Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso!

The only thing I am worried about is the series composition writer here–  Yasuyuki Muto has done some decent anime films like Afro Samurai catering to american culture and scripted some decent episodes of RD Sennō Chōsashitsu.

However, it’s the Bible Black and Ryōjoku no Machi hentai series that have me worried.  Still can’t believe this was the lead writer on Le Chevalier D’Eon which took an anime series and used 17th century France to its full potential.  Really varied writer that has some oddly mixed series in their catalog of works that I hope can turn Rolling Girls around and deliver something fresh.

SAENAI HEROINE NO SODATE-KATA

  • PRODUCTION STUDIO: A-1 Pictures
  • DIRECTOR: Kanta Kamei
  • ORIGINAL CREATOR: Fumiaki Maruto
  • SERIES COMPOSITION: Fumiaki Maruto
  • CHARACTER DESIGNER: Tomoaki Takase
  • ORIGINAL CHARACTER DESIGNER: Tomoaki Takase
  • MUSIC: Hajime Hyakkoku

Noitamina’s second series to air next to Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso‘s second half.  A series about otaku Tomoya Aki that meets beautiful girl Megumi and decides to model the heroine after his own dojin game after her.  A cross between Bakuman and Welcome to the NHK!.  Now this should be interesting as it’s another adaptation of a light novel series like Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin was last spring.

However, this time the original creator will be working on the scripts and the original character designer doing handling the designs on top of A-1 Pictures animating this!  The PVs for this look really fluid and it’s not a huge surprise here considering how well A-1 is at producing anime series.

On top of that I’m sure the anime won’t be deviating considering how it will be scripted by the author.  Highly unusual to see in the industry.  I haven’t read the light novel and I hope it remains interesting for only a 1-cour series has been announced.

The biggest thing that has me bugged about this series IS the director–  Nanana was a really rushed adaptation of a collection of light novels however a positive point is how Kamei directed Usagi Drop.  As each episode provided this amazing distinction between adults and children and the family relationships that can come from them.

YURI KUMA ARASHI

  • PRODUCTION STUDIO: SILVER LINK
  • DIRECTOR: Kunihiko Ikuhara
  • ORIGINAL CREATOR:
  • SERIES COMPOSITION: Takayo Ikami alongside Kunihiko Ikuhara
  • CHARACTER DESIGNER: Etsuko Sumimoto
  • ORIGINAL CHARACTER DESIGNER: Akiko Morishima
  • MUSIC: Yukari Hashimoto

THIS looks really promising.  I’ve already seen the opening to this: as lewd as it may be it sounds fantastic and looks visually stunning! Can’t wait to see what the first episode offers!

One of my favorite director Kunihiko Ikuhara created the early 90’s series Revolutionary Girl Utena and 2011’s Mawaru Penguindrum.  Pretty much everyone that worked on Penguindrum is back for this series about a sci-fi series mahou shojo series that features a Wuthering Heights Academy where girls fall in love with each other.  I hope that Ikuhara has more influence over Ikami’s scripts because this is definitely someone who didn’t deliver well on a few episodes of Arcana Famiglia and Kami-sama no Memo-chō.

Another issue is animation studio SILVER LINK–  one of the worst series they’ve ever produced has got to be Tasogare Otome x Amnesia.  Speaking of last year, they didn’t do so well with Girlfriend Beta or Rokujōma no Shinryakusha!? either.  Too many closeup shots that reflect in a negative light the story.  Hopefully we won’t have too many of those with this series here.

Putting aside the script and production studio issues I might have with this we’ve got an awesome composer in charge of the soundtrack–  Yukari Hashimoto of Mawaru Penguindrum and Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei’s first ending composition!  I enjoyed the animation designs for Honey & Clover II, and I hope that Etsuko Sumimoto can get these designs adapted smoothly from the manga author!
