So with my final impression underway I will try to refrain from spoiler plot points for those that have not seen this show.

Without a doubt in my mind this was one of my favorite anime series to have aired in the Fall 2013 to Winter 2014 timeslot.  That season wasn’t as difficult to figure out what was good and what ended up being horrible unlike the spring and summer season of this year that we’ve had.  Putting aside some of the great offerings of the Winter 2014 season, the Fall 2013 season was for the most part nonexistent.

Kyoukai no Kanata [Beyond the Boundary] was a very beautiful series to watch but the plot was lacking whole heartedly.  Samurai Flamenco was crazy fun with all of the changing of genres yet the ending didn’t feel complete.  Originally I stopped watching Diabolik Lovers only to later finish it after it’s airing and it was one of the worst anime adaptations from an otome game I’ve ever seen.  Galilei Donna had promise with the use of history about Galileo but ended up being too short for how much material the creators chose to include.  Coppelion had pretty background visuals and a neat premise at first but here just like Galilei Donna fell short due to it’s rushed and incoherent ending.  Pupa was a short-lived disaster that was only getting delayed because the television broadcasters were too afraid of airing risky gory animation.  This resulted in the final product of the blu-ray being horribly animated. The only other series aside from Kill la Kill that I can think of that had a lasting impression on me was Kyousogiga.  Talk about an inventive  science fiction and fantasy series- one that takes you to a whole other level.  Reminded me a little bit of Mahou Shoujotai in how the world was very mystical.  Kyosogiga was a really unique show to watch each week!

Hiroyuki Imaishi the director of Gurren Lagann, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt and got his start as a key animator for Anno’s Evangelion series left Gainax with Masahiko Ohtsuka to establish their new animation studio. Trigger.  Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the best mecha series I have ever seen it was just written exceptionally well.

Kill la Kill is something of a spiritual successor to Gurren Lagann– without that show I do not believe this anime nor Anime Mirai Projects’ Little Witch Academia would have been made.  Gurren influenced so many themes that Kill la Kill uses throughout its progression- with the overall presentation being ‘intensified’.

Ryuko Matoi the average transfer student with a mysterious past is hell-bent on revenge- sounds simple right?  Uncovering the mysterious other half of her scissor blade only to embark on a journey with oddly-formed friendships and the boldness to show some skin.  She’s a lot like Yoko from Gurren in how she is viewed by the men throughout the series- both anime known for fan service sequences largely incorporated into the plot.  A lot of the times in Gurren while it would come off as extremely funny I felt like it was unnecessary for the heart of the story.  Here it is portrayed as a strong structure as clothing and sexuality became the big message of Kill la Kill.  Incorporating this as the main focus in mind- with the help of Gainax’s animation techniques makes out its visuals to be uniquely engaging and attractive.

This is a series that illustrates the mahou shojo genre fairly well as it piles on with each episode a fierce performance with the intention of being profoundly seductive.  This is where its interesting as Senketsu is the motivational force in pushing Ryuko further and further into something more than just a schoolgirl.  This does however spiral in a huge reveal towards the end- I’d say I was pretty satisfied with that moment.  Very interesting concept to develop clothing as more than what it is- quite the element of surprise for an anime that looks to be your typical action/adventure series.

The big problem however is in how this show portrays its villains.  At first we are to believe its Satsuki Kiryuin and her Elite Four of the student council, but in fact it’s just a mother with the desire to control the world.  This has been done to death in anime series!

The soundtrack, where do I even start? It was quite powerful but it had its share of issues.  Hiroyuki Sawano is becoming one of the most productive composers in the industry- being that he has so much on his list since 2011, and he’s got a ton of works on his plate even this year!  The problem however is how indistinguishable every song is- and it’s not just in this anime that he has done this to- in where he chooses high impact rather than being influentially creative with diversity.  You could paste some of the tracks he’s provided for this show into Aldnoah.Zero and it would have worked just the same.  I will say that he’s got a knack for an explosive style that creates passionate sequences- songs that are very compelling to give a listen to but where there is not a whole lot of substance like composer Yoko Kanno has pulled off.  Zankyou no Terror, Cowboy Bebop, Sakamichi no Apollon, and even Darker than Black were widely varied- I could go on with her list of incredibly mixed compositions!

If Mako Mankanshoku hadn’t been in Kill la Kill I’m sure I would have rated this around a 80 or so.  She is the best character in this series as she personifies the best friend trope so well.  A wacky and playful schoolgirl is just the break this show needed from all the adrenaline pumping action scenes and intense angst-filled drama.  I’d also like to mention how cool Tsumugu was- that’s one hell of a way to give someone an introduction in Episode 5!

I am so glad to be finishing up this series, it’s about time.  Like I said before I’ve had these posts sitting in my drafts for quite some time.  Haven’t started my final review of this series but I should hopefully have it out sometime today or tomorrow.

I know right now that I like Gurren Lagann better than this show due to its plot, but some of the people in this anime are a lot stronger than quite a few of the cast in Gurren.  Especially Mako.

We are at the finale of this series one that I’ve got to say had a rather satisfying conclusion.  It wasn’t the best out of the Winter 2014 Season but nonetheless it was still pretty damn fun.  Ragyo really is a terrible mother- she’s manipulated her family to the height of destroying her husband and abandoning her children.  She even tried to kill one of her own- downright crazy!  Here though I’d like to point out how she follows the generic anime villain- absolute power over the covers to become a god and control the world even the universe.  Doesn’t this sound like every other evil in action anime series?    How typical to use a hegemonic theme in a show so brash as this but a good point is how its overshadowed for the most part by its focal point.  Clothing.

If it wasn’t for Trigger’s animation style, Mako’s comedic scenes, and just about every person in the show having so much sometimes unexplained energy this show would have been so dull.  So Ryuko battles Ragyo in space- silly but somehow it worked.  It made since considering how she covered the world in darkness with her powers and still wanted more.  I don’t think I liked the decision the writers took on handling this side of the plot however the conclusion was somewhat gratifying.

This wasn’t my favorite episode but it sure did end on a high note and I have to admit I’ve enjoyed the art style very much.  Also want to add that this show will be receiving an OVA in its final blu-ray release- have to wonder how the writers will be able to add even more seeing how they ended things here.

Kill la Kill Episode 23

I wanted to keep this post short but sweet as I want to try to avoid spoilers in my reviews- some series its tough to refrain from that.

Time for the final showdown- this didn’t disappoint at all!  Mako being the strongest in her Goku Uniform was very surprising- at last we get to see her fight the COVERS! This episode just re-emphasized how ridiculous it can be yet it is highly engrossing!  The original Life Fiber cuts the Naked Sol in half which was very funny because that Nudist Beach ship has seen worse attacks on the actual bridge between Ryuko and Satsuki fighting!  This was so much fun to watch!

Haha the Great Naked Dagger- I’ve enjoyed since episode 1 how this series introduces its characters and special attacks with giant red kanji displayed on the screen.  The plot might not be as thought provoking as some of the shows we had in the Fall 2013/Winter 2014 season but this episode had to be the most ostentatious out of anything we’ve seen so far- even Space Dandy.

Wouldn’t say its better than that show as Space Dandy is charmingly humorous- Kill la Kill has always been exceedingly vivacious in the delivery of its scenes and its main cast of characters!  Even those grainy still shots at the very end of the episodes in this series are wild, and sharply drawn!

Kill la Kill Episode 22

I can never get tired of watching those transformation scenes- Trigger did phenomenal work at animating those sequences!

Neglected to mention last time how great it was to see Ryuko rip Junketsu off herself as blood was flying off of her.  Just reaffirms the idea that the clothing in this show act like humans. Finally!  We get to see Iori’s form Regalia!  Do want to point out how this episode switched themes here- we went from a few episodes of an adrenaline rush of action even for more than the first half of this episode to a calm before the storm.  Nice to see this switch up. It’s interesting to see how this show had started out from high-society controlling the masses based on clothing into the transformation of human determination and finding their own strength at solving problems.  This episode completely ripped apart every notion that clothing is absolute power.

As much as I like Ryuko considering how she finally got her scissor blade complete- Nui stole the show here.  She’s even more crazy than previously seen- her arms get cut off, there is tons of blood and she’s freaking out so much!  That scene where she kept saying she was pissed was very frightening- just goes to show how far the villains in Kill la Kill will go to achieve their objectives.  Mako transformed into her Goku Uniform again! Awesome!

Kill la Kill Episode 21

vlcsnap-2014-08-28-19h27m05s82 vlcsnap-2014-08-28-19h27m13s194 vlcsnap-2014-08-28-19h27m38s0 vlcsnap-2014-08-28-19h32m46s139

The amount of action in this was crazy!  So the Elite Four and their Student Council head Satsuki battle it out against Ryuko- this was a delight to see, as earlier on we saw her fight them one on one.  Very well animated too!  The only thing that detracted from the fight itself were the dialogues and those strange panel scenes.  Ping Pong pulled it off so much stronger at adding those in tune with the music and the plot- here it just felt forced.  The animators  were trying to be even more unique when it didn’t need to be.

Mako has got to be one of the most humorous characters I’ve seen in quite some time- she’s so random and silly that this contrasts Ryuko’s harsh and stoic personality extremely well.  Aside from that here we see her finally put on Senketsu only to punch Ryuko in the face- stripping herself and forcing Ryuko to wear him once again!  She’s a fantastic person in the show that’s continuously headstrong and balances not just Ryuko but the rest of the cast well even more so in her serious moments! The segment where Mako broke inside of Ryuko’s mind and heart to break her dream state marriage was quite inventive.

That fight between Nui and Satsuki was drawn so beautifully and it was great to see Nui lose her cool!  So much blood after getting stabbed by the other half of the scissor!  This show doesn’t hold back one bit!

Kill la Kill Episode 20

vlcsnap-2014-08-28-19h10m34s172 vlcsnap-2014-08-28-19h10m40s3 vlcsnap-2014-08-28-19h11m33s245 vlcsnap-2014-08-28-19h12m06s59

I know this is way past its airing but I figured what the hell. Might as well get the rest of these out.  I’ve had these sitting in my drafts for quite some time and decided to add some finishing touches to the posts.

I absolutely love Gainax series.  Technically this isn’t a Gainax series but one done by former employees of the company.  Animation studio Trigger.  These guys are fantastic when it comes to creating anime that is unique yet still has so many tropes thrown in that keep it refreshing.  This is their first full fledged anime series separate from Gainax and it has been a tremendous experience!  Every episode has reminded me of how intense Gurren Laggann was- I say this because that series and now Kill la Kill has consistently been able to be fully energetic in action, humor, drama, and animation!

There were so many different angle shots in this- especially where Ryuko rode off on her bike in the beginning.  It’s great to finally see the Elite Four join up with Nudist Beach- much earlier this show had pitted them against each other and now we’ve got them side-by-side against Ragyo!  This anime is never subtle when it comes to the resolve of its characters- most notably Aikuro’s flashy nude scenes gives off such highly engaging comedy.  That scene where Mako is reunited with her family was pretty powerful- Sawano did a terrific job on the soundtrack here just like Aldnoah.Zero.  This has to be one of my favorite soundtracks of 2013.  Here though it’s on a different level because the scenes in this show even this episode are wild as characters fly pass the screen unclothed, and some are getting attacked by COVERS!  Nothing can hold this show back- even when Satsuki is escaping her cell fighting off the guards completely in the nude!  Haha!  This show is so much fun to watch!  I had a feeling Ryuko would get manipulated but have to hand it to Imaishi for handling this very well- what an adrenaline rush between Ryuko and Satsuki- Satsuki wearing Senketsu and Ryuko wearing Junketsu!  Awesome cliffhanger too!

Kill La Kill Episode 19

Just to let you all know I won’t have a review up yet for Samurai Flamenco Episode 18 due to the delay in broadcast from the Olympics. I will have a review sometime after its airing next week. Now on to Kill La Kill’s latest episode. This series still manages to be intense, but right at the end of that huge battle everything seemed to quiet down. GAINAX sure knows how to pull subtlety very well. Kill La Kill Episode 18

png00062 png00063 png00064 png00065

Flashy is one word to describe this episode. This was an such entertaining episode, yet predictable for a GAINAX series. Finally Matoi faces off once again with Nui and this time she is not so hot-headed. I enjoyed this episode a lot because it jumped further into the Kiryuin family and the fact that there was another daughter of the Kiryuins being experimented on. This was very typical of GAINAX to pull something of a family scientist nature to the show, that won’t be explored for more than one or perhaps two episodes. Continue reading Kill La Kill Episode 18
